MARY JANE BERMAN GRADING RUBRIC FOR LONG WRITING ASSIGNMENT Grading: Students will be graded on the following criteria: Quality of Ideas (25 points) Unacceptable, Weak, Okay, Strong, Outstanding -range and depth of argument -logic of argument -quality of thought -quality of original thought -appropriate sense of complexity of the topic -awareness of opposing views Organization and Development (25 points) -clarity of thesis statement -logical and clear arrangement of ideas -effective use of transitions -unity and coherence of paragraphs -details and evidence that contribute to the support of the thesis or main idea -neatness Clarity and Style (20 points) -ease of readability due to appropriate voice, tone, and style -clarity of sentence structure -appropriate variety and maturity of sentence structure -uses words appropriately and accurately -uses words with associations appropriate to meaning and purpose -used the active voice, put action in verbs -keeps related words together -no use of unnecessary words Grammar (20 points) -grammatically correct sentences -correct use of commas -no run-on sentences -no sentence fragments -correct spelling -no typographical errors -title page -numbered pages
