Becoming a Howe Center Writing Consultant

The Howe Writing Center employs undergraduate and graduate students as writing consultants.  For 2009-2010, we seek applications from current first and second-year students in every major.

Training

To prepare for writing consultant jobs, students must take “Writing Center Consulting” (ENG 481/581). This 3-credit course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 to 3:30. Professor Heidi McKee is the instructor. 

Course Description

Enrollment in the course is limited to students who have been selected through the application process described below.

Consulting

Upon completion of ENG 481/581, students are eligible to be paid consultants in the Howe Writing Center. Pay is $7.70 per hour for undergraduates and $9.20 per hour for graduate students. Scheduling is flexible.

Application Process

To apply for a Howe Center position, please submit the following to Kate Francis (francik@muohio.edu).

1. A letter of application, that includes the following:

   -Your name, unique ID, major, and year at Miami

   -Why you are interested in becoming a consultant

   -The relevant experiences and talents you would bring to the position

2. A résumé that includes a list of your coursework and extracurricular activities
3. A recommendation form a faculty member at Miami addressing your personal and academic qualifications for the position (the faculty member should email this directly to Kate Francis)

We will interview the finalists for our openings.
