English 481/581: Writing Center Consulting
T/Th 2:15-3:30
Dr. Heidi McKee
mckeeha@muohio.edu

This 3-credit seminar is designed to help you learn more about writing and to prepare you to be a consultant in the Howe Writing Center.

We will begin this course by examining theories of writing and writing processes and by exploring the roles of writing centers and consultants in relation to the teaching of writing.

We will then focus for the majority of the semester on the consulting process, reading articles by writing center practitioners (including undergraduate consultants), observing in the Howe Writing Center, engaging in practice tutorials, and then actually consulting with Miami writers in the Howe Writing Center.

Some of the issues we will address include learning different approaches for responding to writing, strategies for writing across the disciplines, strategies for working with writers for whom English is a second language, and the differing rhetorical expectations of different types of writing (including digital writing). Beginning in mid-September, as part of your course learning, you will observe and then consult two hours per week in the Howe Writing Center.

You must apply and be accepted to enroll in this course.

If you have any questions about the course, please contact Heidi McKee (mckeeha@muohio.edu). If you have any questions about the application process, please contact Kate Francis (francik@muohio.edu).
