Professor of History and
American Studies. Mary received her B.A. (Psychology
and English majors from the University of Virignia,
and her A.M. and Ph.D. from Brown University (American
Civilization). Her area of scholarly expertise
is U.S. Intellectual and Cultural History. She is the
author of Emerson's Emergence: Self and Society
in the Transformation of New England, 1800-1840,
as well as co-editor of The Encyclopedia of American
Social History and The Encyclopedia of American
Cultural and Intellectual History. Most recently
she has served as director of Miami's University Honors
Program.
Mary lived
in the D.C. area during the Vietnam War era and worked
during the summers for the Department of Defense from
1972-76. She was fortunate to be able to sit in
on the Vietnam seminar, with the kind permission of
the course instructors.
