Present: Doug Curry, Chair; Janet Cox, Vanessa Cummings, Stephen Gordon, Pete Haverkos, Melanie Hoffmann, Scott Lessing, Marsha McIntosh, Sarah McNitt, Karen O’Hara, Kelly Phillips, Ted Pickerill, Amy Poppel, Anne Schauer, LaTania Thomas, Frances Yates

The meeting was called to order by Doug Curry.

Budget discussion (David Creamer, Robin Parker, Carol Hauser)
Issues relating to Miami’s ongoing budget deficit were discussed with UPAC members. There is an urgent need to address Miami’s ongoing financial issues for FY 2009-2010 and beyond. Preserving academics is the highest priority. The situation remains in flux; decisions on any further reductions will depend upon state funding and other pending decisions. Carol reiterated the need for staff to offer suggestions at http://www.muohio.edu/ThisMakesCents to promote more efficient processes and business practices.

The minutes of the November meeting were approved.

Academic Personnel Update (Janet Cox)

  • Current projects focus primarily on budgetary issues.

Personnel Update (Marsha McIntosh/Kelly Phillips)

  • Kelly reminded members that the Work/Life Expo is scheduled for Thursday, December 4.
  • Current projects focus primarily on budgetary issues.
  • Employee Health and Well Being (EHWB) has several upcoming events. The recent smoking cessation program was well-received.

On behalf of UPAC, Doug thanked Marsha McIntosh for her service to UPAC and wished her well in her new duties.

Senate Representative (Anne Schauer)

  • University Senate has been asked to complete a survey to prioritize fiscal issues within the overall mission of the university. Anne hopes to share this information with members before the survey deadline.

Academic Policy Representative (Pete Haverkos)

  • Next meeting is scheduled for December 10. The eLiteracy module will be discussed. More information is forthcoming.

Networking (Sarah McNitt)

  • The next UPAC luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9. Guest speaker is Andrew Beckett.

Communications (Steve Gordon)

  • Photos and biographies are still needed from some new members.

Old Business

  • The UPAC survey has been postponed. Frances noted that results from a recent survey on diversity issues may be of interest to UPAC.
  • A Regional Campus Meeting will be held at VOA on March 3. Doug will arrange transportation.
