UPAC: Meeting Minutes: Apr 2007

Present: Cheryl Newton, chair; Mary Bausano, Matt Boaz, Kris Cassano, Janet Cox, Doug Curry, Bill Heck, Melanie Hoffmann, Scott Lessing, Marsha McInstosh, Amy Poppel, Barry Zaslow
Guest: Carol Hauser, Director of Human Resources

The minutes of the March meeting were approved.


Announcements and Special Reports

  • Carol Hauser presented a draft plan of the new Paternal Leave Policy. The most notable addition to the parental leave policy in its draft form is the recommendation that the University offer paid parental leave contiguous with the birth of a child. UPAC members had to opportunity to discuss the proposed plan with Carol and to make comments.
  • Carol Hauser reported that the Benefits Committee will send its recommendations on health care benefits to President Hodge in mid-April.
  • The next UPAC luncheon is scheduled for April 10 with Dr. Curt Ellison as guest.

Committee Reports
Human Resources (Marsha McIntosh)

  • Marsha requested a volunteer from UPAC to help with the interview for the Benefits Generalist position.  Matt Boaz volunteered.
  • Hawk Walk is in full swing.  Those with questions or suggestions should contact Jay Kimiecik or Marlene Diers.
  • Summer Sensations 2007 brochures will be distributed in April.  The brochure contains information on discounted rates for Miami University employees at regional attractions.
  • Summer hours for all three campuses have been finalized and posted.

Janet Cox (Academic Personnel)

  • Bruce Cochrane has been named Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School.
  • Proposed guidelines for the increment process will be distributed to the Vice Presidents and Deans by April 13.  The increment pool includes 1.75% merit increase plus an additional .75-1.75% increase for special improvement.  (The exact amount of the special improvement increase Is dependent on the admission yield for next year’s first-year class.)

Communications (Melanie Hoffmann)

  • Nominations for UPAC membership are due by Friday, April 6.  Nominations will be discussed at the next working meeting of UPAC.
  • Flyers advertising the UPAC Open Forum will be mailed the week of April 9.

Senate (Amy Poppel)
No report.

Academic Policy (Mary Bausano)

  • Academic Policy committee recommended that a student on Academic Warning be permitted to take classes credit/no credit.

Key Contacts (Matt Boaz)

  • Matt will forward the list of “key contacts” to UPAC members along with a request to look for well-connected unclassified employees who could be added to the list.
  • Doug Curry volunteered to be a backup key contact person to send out messages in the event that Matt is unavailable.

Old Business

  • UPAC Open Forum is scheduled for Thursday, April 26 from 8:00-9:30 in the Heritage Room.  Drs. Hodge, Herbst, and Ms Hauser will respond to questions.

New Business

  • Bill Heck modified CPAC bylaws for UPAC to use as a starting point for discussion at the next working meeting on Tuesday, April 14.
