The environment. This concept alone drove me to decide that Miami is the place for me. Coming from New Jersey, I really wanted to get away from all the pollution and congestion, but also to learn how to fix these problems for the future.

I had little interest in sustainability until my freshman year when I took Environmental Geology with Dr. Hauer, where I learned about climate change, energy consumption, natural disasters, and other physical processes. Now, almost everything I do is directly related to environmental sustainability in and around Oxford.

I’m the faculty adviser to GreenHawks Media, Miami’s student-run environmental media, and a freelance journalist whose passion is the intersection of the environment and business worlds. I’ve been teaching multimedia journalism at Miami since 2004.

Get efficient with your office equipment

Office equipment and electronics use energy even when idle or on stand-by. To save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at work, always activate the power management features on your computer and monitor, unplug laptop power cords when not in use and turn off equipment and lights at the end of the day. Consider using a power strip that can be turned off when you're done using your computers, printers, wireless routers and other electronics.
