SUMSRI
Is Miami University in Florida? No.
Miami University is in Oxford, Ohio and actually existed before Miami,
Florida! Oxford is located in the rolling hills of southwestern Ohio.
The summer's are comfortable with cool mornings and evenings and only a
few days per summer
in the 90's. Our dormitory and classrooms are air-conditioned.

| Will I be teamed
one-to-one with a Miami professor to do research? No. Each student
will be assigned to
one of three research groups based on the student's personal choice and
mathematics
background. Each group has a director. Two of these directors will be
Miami
professors. The third director will be brought in from another
university.
The research director will suggest topics for study. Groups range in
size
from 3 to 7 students. Students are encouraged to be part of a research
team. |

| Can I get academic credit for attending SUMSRI?
SUMSRI may count as research credit at your college upon application.
Check into it. At this time Miami University does not offer
credit for SUMSRI.. |

| Will I have access to a computer while
attending SUMSRI? Yes. All SUMSRI participants have access to two
computer labs in the Math/Stat department. Each dormitory room will
also be equipped with a computer. Each computer has minitab, Matlab and
Maple software packages as well as AMS-Tex and LaTex mathematical
typesetting packages. |

What will our schedule
be like? The schedule for SUMSRI 2006 has not been set yet. Classes
will vary based on the availability of the professors. Basically though
the first three weeks
are pretty structured and look something like this:

The last four weeks are unstructured
time
in which to conduct further research and meet with your seminar
director
on writing up the results of your research and preparing a final
presentation.

| Will we have to find our
own
housing? No. SUMSRI students are housed together in an
air-conditioned
dormitory on campus. Meals are provided in one of the campus
cafeterias.
There is a small kitchen available for common use in the dormitory.
In 2000, the students liked to study in
the dormitory hallway! But this is not a requirement of the program.

| What recreational facilities are available at
Miami University? Miami University has a fully equipped
Recreational Sports Center including an Olympic sized swimming pool and
diving platforms, weight rooms, climbing wall and equipment rental. We
have tennis courts and Goggin Ice Arena on campus. Beautiful jogging
trails are also nearby. |

What should I bring to SUMSRI?
- Comfortable clothes and personal grooming items
- A fall weight jacket (the mornings and some rooms can be
chilly)
- Comfortable shoes for walking across campus and into town.
(there is no public transportation during the summer, but most things
are available within a square mile)
