POR 111

Accelerated Introduction to Portuguese (4)

Intensive language course that allows student to complete the equivalent of first year Portuguese in one semester. For those with background in Spanish or another romance language, the course concentrates on basic skills and prepares students for POR 211. Prerequisite: SPN 101, 102 or 111; FRE 101, 102 or ITL 101, 102; or three years of a high school Romance language.

POR 211

Second Year Portuguese (4)

Intensive language course that allows students to complete the equivalent of second year Portuguese in one semester. Prerequisite: POR 111. CAS-A.

POR 311

Grammar Review and Introductory Composition (3)

Continued development of the four linguistic skills with emphasis on writing and grammar. Prerequisite: POR 211, appropriate placement exam score, or consent of the instructor

POR 315

Introduction to Literary Texts: Lusophone Literature (3)

Close reading and critical analysis of selected poetry, essay, narrative fiction and drama from Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. Prerequisite: POR 311, appropriate placement exam score, or consent of the instructor.

Note: POR 111 is offered in the Fall semester, and POR 211 is offered in the Spring Semester.

By taking Portuguese, you can fulfill the following requirements:

  1. The foreign-language requirement in two semesters;
  2. Latin-American studies minor: language requirement/subject areas requirement.
