Master of Arts Degree
The graduate program in Spanish at Miami University offers students the opportunity to earn the Master's Degree through advanced study of Spanish and Latin American literature and Spanish language and linguistics. Enrollment in the program presumes a strong undergraduate background in Hispanic language and literature. The program leading to the MA degree is designed to move students beyond their undergraduate training through courses that offer both comprehensive and in-depth study of Hispanic literatures and linguistics. Independent research skills are developed through work with faculty advisers toward completion of a thesis or a research tutorial project.
The degree can lead to more advanced graduate study in a doctoral program, or to careers in teaching, in government, or in the private sector where knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures is a requirement or an asset.
Graduate Assistantships are available and prospective students are strongly urged to apply. Teaching Assistants receive training in foreign language teaching methodology and are responsible for teaching one section of elementary Spanish per semester under the supervision of a faculty member. All Graduate Assistants receive a stipend for their nine-month appointment (for 2005-2006 approximately $10,170), plus remission of their instructional fee and out-of-state tuition surcharge. Summer support is also available for those students who wish to register for thesis or research tutorial hours during the summer.
Normally the M.A. Degree is obtained after four semesters of study, although it is possible to finish in three. Work for a Master's Degree must be completed within a maximum of five calendar years. Partial credit may be given for work between five and ten years old, but such credit must be gained by way of petition to the Graduate School.
