The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is pleased
to announce the following awards and scholarships
1. The Glenn Barr Scholarship. These scholarships
are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and need
to students of junior or senior class standing. Preference
is given to Spanish majors. A personal statement in Spanish
is required, stating the applicant's qualifications and reasons
for applying.
2. The Willis Knapp Jones Award. These awards
are to be used by students majoring in Spanish who will be
studying abroad during the next academic year or semester,
or during the summer session. A personal essay in Spanish
is required stating the applicant's objectives and expectations
for study in Spain or Latin America.
3. The Elizabeth S. Rogers Scholarship.
These scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in advanced
courses both in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and
the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration, and
who plan to study in a Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking country
during the next academic year. A personal essay in Spanish
or Portuguese is required stating the applicant's objectives
and expectations upon studying abroad, including how this
experience would be applied to a career in business.
4. The Portuguese Study Travel Award. This
travel award is to be used by students who will be studying
abroad during the next academic year or semester, or during
the summer session in a Portuguese-speaking country.
5. The Timothy J. Rogers Memorial Scholarship.
This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student
of sophomore, junior, or senior class standing on the basis
of academic merit. Recipients must be enrolled in an accredited
academic program in Spain during the semester(s) he/she receives
the scholarship. In order to be considered for the scholarship,
applicants must be officially enrolled as a major in the Department
of Spanish and Portuguese and have taken courses in Spanish
at the 300 level or above.
6. The Irvin Essay Awards. Awarded to the best essay submitted by an undergraduate or graduate student. Undergraduate essays should be 3-5 pages written in Spanish on any aspect of Hispanic culture (personal experience, literature, linguistics).
Graduate essays should be 5-10 pages written in Spanish and reflect some scholarly interest in Hispanic culture. Submissions should be the original plus three copies with the author's name appearing only on a separate cover page.
Applications for scholarships are located outside of room 268 Irvin Hall. All submissions should be turned in at 268 Irvin Hall during normal business hours.
