Assistantships and Fellowships

Graduate Assistantships

All assistantships offered through Speech Pathology and Audiology cover tuition during the academic year and the summer. Furthermore, each assistantship is accompanied by a monthly stipend. Assistantship holders also receive a stipend during the summer provided that they register for classes during the summer sessions. All assistantships are awarded on an annual basis and are not automatically renewed for the second year of study.

Modified assistantships require 8 hours of work per week. Half-time assistantships require 20 hours of work per week.

Modified Graduate Assistantships (8 hours/week)

The graduate student is teamed up with a faculty supervisor in Speech Pathology and Audiology to work on research and/or teaching projects. Research responsibilities may include literature reviews, data collection, organization, and management, as well as assisting in the preparation of manuscripts and conference presentations. Teaching duties may include grading of papers and projects, organizing and leading small group discussions and labs, and other duties pertaining to a given course.

Sign Language Assistantship

These are 8-hour assistantships that require extensive sign language background. The primary responsibility is to teach one section of introductory level sign-language classes (SPA 248; 3 credit hours) under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen Hutchinson.

Clinic Assistantship (20 hours/week)

clinical researchThis assistantship requires organization and administrative abilities. The student is responsible for managing and maintaining the materials/supply room in the MU Clinic, scheduling pre-school screenings, and other administrative tasks relating to the clinic under the supervision of the Clinic Director.

Mary Thew Fowler Fellowships (8 hours/week for two academic years)

These two-year fellowships are made available through a generous endowment by Ms. Mary Thew Fowler. They include a tuition waiver for the academic year and the summer and a stipend with an eight-hour assistantship for the academic year.

Non-Departmental Assistantships

Other offices on campus control these assistantships and they include: Library, Residence Life, Office of Learning Assistance, and others.
