  • There is a CSDCAS FAQ on the front page of the portal website (linked above in part # 3).

You are encouraged to read these over before beginning the application process.

  • CSDCAS Deadline:

The CSDCAS deadline of January 1 refers to when an applicant must e-submit their on-line application ONLY.  If you do NOT submit your on-line application prior to the deadline, you will no longer be able to apply to our program.  PLEASE NOTE that the CSDCAS deadline does not apply to transcripts or letters of recommendation (LOR).  Applicants can submit transcripts and paper LOR’s after the deadline and CSDCAS will still process the application.  All supporting material needs to be on file by the time applicants are reviewed by Miami– see Miami Deadlines.

Miami University Department Deadlines:

Submission deadline for both the Graduate School and CSDCAS applications is January 1.  All materials must be received by CSDCAS (transcripts, statements and letters of recommendation) in order for an application to be reviewed by the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology.  The application review process begins January 10.  No incomplete file will be reviewed after January 26.

Please keep in mind that submitting a complete file and meeting minimum GPA and other admission requirements for the graduate school of Miami University does not guarantee admission into this program.

Graduate Program Admission Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree  (B.A or B.S) from an accredited institution.

As part of the degree students should have taken:

  • a biological science
  • a physical science
  • a college level math course (does not include a course on teaching math)

2.  A minimum GPA of 3.0.

3.  GRE - As of August, 2011 there is a new version of the GRE with different scoring.  Preferred scores for the old version include combined verbal and quantitative scores totaling 1000 and a spontaneous writing score of 4.5.  Information on the new scores will not be available until after November, 2011 and so we have no information on preferred scores until after the 2011-2012 application cycle.

4.  In addition, most students will have one or more of the following experiences:  worked to support themselves in school, volunteered with special populations, engaged in or assisted with research, observed speech-language pathologists and/or audiologists in the work place and been active in one or more student organizations or sports.

5.  Individuals who did not take classes in Speech-Language Pathology as an undergraduate please take note of the following section on prerequisites for Non-Majors.

Meeting minimum GPA and other admission requirements for the graduate school of Miami University does not guarantee admission.

Prerequisites for Non-Majors

In addition to the above requirements there are several "leveling" or prerequisite courses which establish a foundation for graduate work in the speech-language pathology.  These courses can be taken at any school and at any time in a program in Speech Pathology as a non-degree status student.  Miami University does reserve the right to assess courses taken at another institution to determine if these courses adequately prepare the student for graduate work at Miami.

The following courses are required before taking graduate courses:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism
  • Phonetics
  • Language Development

The following courses are required but can, in some cases be taken during graduate study.  Note that this may require extending the time required to complete the degree.

  • Introduction to Audiology
  • Aural Rehabilitation
  • Speech and Hearing Science
  • Language Disorders

Advantages of Taking Prerequisites Prior to Application and Admission

First, it will help keep students on track for timely program completion.  The graduate program is two years, but those who have not taken all prerequisite courses may take longer.

Second, in order to be eligible for graduate monetary support a student must be a full-time graduate student.  Undergraduate credits cannot be counted as part of the minimum full-time graduate course load.

Third, successful completion of undergraduate courses in the major helps to demonstrate a student's potential for graduate study.  Graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology are very competitive and it is to your advantage to provide evidence of your mastery of basic level courses.

Recommended Additional Experience

Prior to engaging in clinical practicum experiences the American Speech-Language and Audiology Association requires that students spend a minimum of 25 hours of observing accredited and licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) and Audiologists engaged in the provision of clinical services.  These hours must be carefully documented and must include the nature of the observation (age, type of disorder/therapy) the professional’s signature, their valid ASHA accreditation number and valid state license number.  Completing these hours prior to entering the program provides you with valuable insight into some of the professional responsibilities of an SLP and enables you to be assigned to clinical experiences soon after you enter the program.

Meeting minimum GPA and other admission requirements for the graduate school of Miami University does not guarantee admission.
