Miami University Stroke Group
The purpose of the Miami University Stroke Group is to provide a supportive, encouraging, therapeutic environment for those who have experienced communication deficits secondary to stroke. This program was implemented over 20 years ago and currently has members from a 4 county area. Family members and friends are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in activities. The group currently meets the first Friday of the month from 10:00-12:00 at the Knolls of Oxford during the academic year (September through May). During this time, speech pathology graduate students lead group and individualized communication activities. “Stroke survivors, especially those who acquire communication impairments, lose much of their social life as a result of their stroke. Support groups like ours can provide a little of that lost social contact and that is probably one of the main reasons for our success. Another important factor is that people with aphasia/apraxia are much more likely to feel at ease when trying to talk among people who share and understand the difficulties they experience.” (W.E.
