Dysphagia
Dr. Donna Scarborough’s current research includes collaboration with Dr. Lori Isaacson of the Miami University Neuroscience Center of Behavior, to develop a map of the medulla of the location and neurochemistry of neurons involved in the gag reflex. Ultimately this information will help us better diagnose and treat individuals who present with a hypersensitive gag reflex. Another ongoing line of research from the lab involves collecting ultrasound data during swallowing with typically developing toddlers and pre-schoolers. Another research line involves extensive collaboration with Dr. Michael Bailey Van Kuren of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Miami University. Several ongoing projects include development of a pressure point glove that alters the gag reflex, creation of a slow-flow sippy cup and construction and testing with infant and toddlers a prototype high chair.
