Independent Study in Sociology
Independent Study in Sociology is offered as SOC 177,
277, 377 or 477 (1-5 credit hours). Independent studies
are based on arrangements that students initiate with
individual faculty members, and require approval from
the Department Chair.
Requirements:
- Only 3 hours of Independent Study may be included
in the Sociology major. Once the 36-hour minimum for
the major has been reached, the restriction of limited
hours is removed.
- Independent Study courses are only permitted for
students with at least a grade point average of 2.5
in Sociology.
- An Independent Study course is not permitted to
take the place of an existing course.
- The student must have already completed basic work
in the area.
- The student must submit a written project proposal;
applications are available in the Department Office,
375 Upham.
- Faculty members may supervise only one Independent
Study student per semester.
- Written permission of the instructor is required.
- Written permission of the Department Chair is required.
- Only 5 hours of Independent Study may be taken per
semester.
