Applied Sociological Research Minor

Applied Sociological Research Minor
The applied sociology minor emphasizes the research aspect of sociology. It is designed to meet the needs of students planning research-oriented careers in organizational settings. Through both course work and field experiences, the course sequence familiarizes students with the various aspects of research methodology and organizations.

Requirements:
The applied sociology minor requires the completion of at least 19 credit hours in approved courses, completion of SOC 462 (Applied Sociological Research), and a fieldwork placement. A maximum of four hours of the fieldwork placement can be counted toward the minor. Students taking SOC 260.A for the fieldwork course for the minor must take it for four hours. Students majoring in sociology and minoring in applied sociological research must also complete all the requirements for the major.

Required courses:
SOC 151 Social Relations 4
STA 261.S Statistics
SOC 262 Research Methods
SOC 417 Economy and Society

OR

SOC 454 Formal Organizations
SOC 462 Applied Sociological Research
SOC 440.A Applied Field Experience 4-16

OR

SOC 260.A Internship: Applied Sociology

A grade point average of 2.50 and permission of the instructor is required before a field placement may be taken. All courses listed above are prerequisites for a field placement. With the exception of SOC l5l and SOC 152, sociology courses taken for the applied research minor may not be used to fulfill the requirements for the sociology major. Applied minor courses may, however, be used to fulfill the related hours requirement.

Students majoring in sociology, and minoring in applied social research, must take an additional four semester credit hours of sociology. The four credit hours obtained from the research methods course (SOC 262) cannot be counted twice -- that is, they may be used to meet either requirements for the major or requirements for the minor, but not both.
