Miami University
Sociology & Gerontology

Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Gerontology.   We are a community of scholars who share concern for the structure of the social world and its resultant inequalities.  We specialize in the study and teaching of social stratification and social inequalities, broadly defined.  We work together to create a department with different disciplinary identities, specialties, and interests.  We aim to appreciate and respect one another's different research areas, research methodologies, theoretical perspectives, teaching approaches, and service contributions.  We value the activist potential of the disciplines of sociology and gerontology.  We strive for engaged teaching, research and learning.

With two dozen full-time faculty members on the Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown campuses, we offer a range of coursework, research opportunities, and extra-curricular learning experiences for both undergraduate and graduate students.  For our undergraduate students, the Department offers majors in Sociology and Gerontology along with seven minors, seven thematic sequences, four capstone courses, and a variety of independent research opportunities. For graduate students, we offer a multi-disciplinary Master's Degree in Gerontological Studies and a PhD in Social Gerontology. The Department's academic programs in Gerontology are administered by the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University, a research center dedicated to the study and dissemination of information related to aging. Scripps also offers a Certificate in Gerontology for professionals seeking specialized training in aging. (http://www.scripps.muohio.edu/scripps/home.html)
