Can I get financial aid to study abroad?

Sponsored and exchange programs allow you to pay all tuition and program fees directly to Miami. All federal, state, and Miami aid** applies to these programs.

Co-sponsored programs require you to pay all tuition and program fees directly to the host institution. All federal and Miami aid** applies (with the exception of the Ohio Leader and Resident Scholarships). You may only receive your state aid if you are studying through another Ohio university.

Approved programs require you to pay all tuition and program fees directly to the host institution. All federal aid applies, but Miami aid** does not.

To be considered for financial aid, complete the following:

**Note: The total amount of Miami scholarships that can be used for study abroad programs cannot exceed the tuition portion of the program fee for the program. Funds cannot be used for room, board, travel, books or miscellaneous fees. The following exceptions to this policy will be in place:

  • The Study Abroad Airfare Grant may be used in addition to any other scholarship assistance, and is applicable to travel fees.
  • Federal and state aid (if applicable) can be applied to fees and expenses in addition to the tuition portion of the program fee.

Students must be enrolled full-time in a fall or spring semester study abroad program. Scholarships are limited to one semester unless the specific study abroad program only has a year option.

Please see the Office of International Education for funding and program selection information.

Miami University Summer Study Abroad Programs

Example: European Educational Systems Biodiversity of Kenya

If you plan to attend a Miami University summer abroad program, all of your federal and state aid will apply towards your expenses. You can apply for assistance by completing the following forms:

  • Submit the FAFSA by deadline online at www.fafsa.gov if you have not already done so for the academic year.

This can be a very long process; and, if at all possible, should be started at least two months prior to leaving the country. Also, you may want to grant power of attorney to one of your parents so that they may sign documents for you while you are out of the country.
