Title: Racial/ Ethnic Disparities in Management of Diabetes

Description: National Institutes of Health awarded a grant to develop and offer a 4 credit hour, cross-listed, undergraduate/graduate level gerontology course, "Ethnic/Racial Disparities in Diabetes Management" (GTY/SOC 4/560).
The course is structured to include both weekly lecture/discussion modules and computer laboratory time. Students will conduct a series of analyses using the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), an on-going and annual data collection program designed to measure behavioral risk factors (including a detailed module on diabetes) in the age 18 or older population who live in the community. Students will be introduced to the life course perspective, and the literatures on minority aging, epidemiology of aging, and health services utilization.
