| How
has the nursing home payer mix changed over
the last 10
years (1993-2003)? |
In 1993, on average, Medicaid paid for 64.3% of all Ohio's nursing home residents; by 2003, Medicaid insured 66.1% of residents. Although the proportion of residents paid for by Medicaid has increased in the 10 years there has been a decrease in the number of residents with Medicaid as their payment source- with 54,062 and 50,798 residents paid for by Medicaid in 1993 and 2003 respectively. In 1993, Medicare was the payer for 4.4% of Ohio's nursing home residents (3,701) and this proportion increased to 12% (9,200) in 2003. These numbers reflect a large increase in the number of nursing home residents who were admitted for short-term acute care services. Residents and/or their families paid for 31.3% (26,354) of Ohio's nursing home care in 1993, this number declined to 21.9% (16,852) in 2003. |
