Curriculum Vitae

Elizabeth Lokon or “Like” (pronounced “Lee-ka”) was born and raised in Indonesia. She received her undergraduate education in studio art from the University of California at Berkeley (B.A.) and the California College of Arts and Crafts (B.F.A). She then pursued graduate studies in education at the University of Hawaii (M.A.) and at Miami University (M.A.T. and Ph.D.). She has taught at various levels, both in the U.S. and Japan since 1979. She has also authored or coauthored several books and chapters in edited books, over twenty journal articles, and given over sixty presentations in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Tapping into her interests and training in the arts, education, and gerontology, Elizabeth is interested in developing creative arts programming for people with dementia. The arts provide opportunities for elders with dementia to create something new and to express their thoughts and emotions. As their disease progresses, the arts may be the only means left for them to communicate with others. It is therefore critical to develop excellent programming in the arts for people with dementia.
