Seeking Treatment
Immediately following a sexual assault, it is absolutely best if you get emergency medical care. Your physical health should be your first priority. You may have injuries that need immediate attention also it is important to test for sexually transmitted infections and discuss the option of emergency contraception. Transportation to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford (110 S. Poplar, 513-523-2111) can be arranged or a friend can come with you. If you call the Butler County Rape Crisis 24-hour hotline at 513-523-4146 a victim advocate from the Butler County Rape Crisis Program can be with you at the hospital. The hospital has specially trained sexual assault nurse examiners who will actually work with you to do a SANE kit (Sexual Assault Nurse Exam). The SANE kit is a thorough exam the gives the victim the medical attention needed after a sexual assault and the exam also collect forensic evidence should the vicitm choose to press charges. You will not be billed for services. You should not change clothes or otherwise cleanse yourself before going to the hospital in order to preserve physical evidence that may be needed for investigation and prosecution should you decide to pursue legal remedies.
Seek emotional support. Often times the hours and days after a sexual assualt are very confusing and disorienting. The coordinator of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program serves as an advocate for victims and can offer support/advise/guidance as to what the victim should do next. The coordinator can help the victim choose which options are right for him/her. Support is also available 24 hours a day by calling the independent Butler County Rape Crisis Program at 513-523-4146. This program provides victim advocates who can meet survivors at the hospital, help them work through feelings, discuss options, and offer assistance with referrals and follow-up. Students may also seek assistance from the University's Oxford Student Counseling Service at 513-529-4634 during normal business hours. On-call counselors can be reached at any time through the university police dispatcher at 513-529-2222.
