Frequently Offered Groups
Below are some groups we often offer during fall and/or spring semesters. Whether a group starts or not depends on how many students express interest in it, so please contact us ASAP if you are interested in any of these groups. If you are interested in a group, please fill out, print, and bring in a "group interest form". The form is also available from your counselor or at the Student Counseling Service (195 Health Services Center). A brief screening interview is required for all groups. Identity and Intimacy Group
This group is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate women who wish to examine their relationships--romantic, friendship, family, etc. The group will consist of six to eight women with diverse experiences and concerns centered around developing and enhancing relationships with others. The group will be facilitated by two female counselors at the Student Counseling Service. If interested please call to schedule a short initial appointment prior to first group meeting.
This short-term group will combine psychoeducation and discussion for persons who are dealing with depression. This group will be most helpful for people who have been experiencing a depressed mood for some time, as well as physical symptoms of depression including fatigue, weight loss, difficulty concentrating, and interference in interpersonal relationships such as social withdrawal.
This four-week group will provide experience and practice in anxiety management techniques including deep breathing, pregressive muscle relaxation, visualization, and managing negative self-talk. It will be especially helpful for students dealing with social or academic anxiety including test anxiety as well as persons experiencing physical symptoms of stress such as headaches, stomachaches and sleeping problems. This group will be offered at least twice each semester.
This short-term group will offer an opportunity to learn and practice interpersonal communication skills, including active listening, dealing with conflict, assertiveness, and confrontation.
Interpersonal Relationship Group
This on going therapy group will provide a context for members to improve difficulties in their lives connected to developing and maintaining satisfying relationships with friends, family, lovers, etc. A confidential environment will be created to help each member to learn how to trust, confront conflicts, understand one's interactional style, and develop healthy relationships with others and with one's self.
Women, Identity and Intimacy Group
This therapy group is for women who are interested in exploring issues related to identity and intimacy. It will focus on your relationship with yourself and others and how past relationship experiences affect you now. Issues addressed will include feeling unsure or unhappy about who you are, hurt or rejection in relationships, and managing closeness and distance. A brief screening interview is required.
Sexual Assault Survivors Group
This group is designed for women who have been recently sexually assaulted (approximately within the past year). The group will be small, consisting of seven to eight women, and will provide therapeutic support with, and validation for, those coping with recent assault. A safe, confidential environment will be created in which rape survivors can share their experience and provide support for one another in discussions of the assault and related issues. A brief screening interview is required.
This group explores issues of manhood in a safe, nurturing, supportive and yet challenging environment. The issues explored include: feelings, beliefs, completing the past, fears, relationships, anger, sexuality, responsibility, friends, money, addiction, loneliness, career, guilt, spirituality, power, conflict confrontation, and whatever else comes up. The group is limited to 10 men.
This group is designed for women who have persistent concerns about weight, body image, and eating but DO NOT engage in eating disorder behavior such as binge eating, vomiting, laxative abuse severe food restrictions, or over-exercising. The focus of the group will be on developing a healthy self-esteem that is not based solely on weight, appearance, or body image. The group will accomplish this through an open and frank discussion format, and experiential activities both in and out of group. A brief screening interview is required.
This group will provide men and women an opportunity to improve on interpersonal and/or emotional difficulties that seem to relate to growing up in a family where dysfunction has been present. Examples of dysfunction include, but are not limited to, substance abuse, mental illness of family members, physical or mental abuse, emotional cut-off, etc. A confidential environment will be created to facilitate the development of healthier relationships with one's self and others.
This group is designed for students who identify themselves as having an eating disorder. This typically means that they engage in behaviors designed to control weight and feel very obsessed and preoccupied with food and dieting. This preoccupation leads to binge eating, periods of self-starvation, laxative abuse, vomiting, or over-exercising. The focus of the group depends somewhat on the members but topics typically include: family, self-esteem, guilt, shame, and relationships. A brief screening interview is required.
This on going therapy group will provide a confidential context in which graduate students can work to improve their lives with respect to a wide range of difficulties. The group will be committed to two core goals of helping each individual develop a healthy, accepting relationship with one's self as well as developing and maintaining satisfying relationships with others, including family, friends, lovers, etc. A supportive but challenging environment will be created to help learn how to trust and to confront the conflicts in ways that help one feel effective and flexible in control.
