CETC Services

The CETC offers a variety of services related to career planning. Our services are offered to full time, Oxford campus Miami Students. Services are available on a walk-in basis with the exception of career counseling appointments.

Computer-Based Self-Assessments
The CETC offers a computer based career self-assessment called eDiscover. This program allows students to learn about their interests, abilities, and values as they relate to careers. Students can then use this information about themselves to look up careers or majors that might be a good fit for them. This program is available via the internet, and can be used from any computer with web access. Come to the CETC to start your own personalized account on the program.

Career Reference Library and Online Library
The CETC houses a library of books related to career exploration. Books related to careers in a variety of fields, careers related to a variety of majors, careers for people of various personality types, and the general process of making a career decision are available. While books cannot be checked out of the CETC, students may make copies of helpful information free of charge. Also available on this website is an Online Library to help you with your career research.

Computer Career Databases
The CETC has a collection of articles about specific careers called the Chronicle Occupational Briefs that students have traditionally found very helpful. These articles outline aspects of a variety of careers including salary, educational requirements, work environments, etc. These articles are available via CD-ROM. Copies of these articles are available at no charge.

Assessment Instruments
CETC has standardized assessment instruments available to help students identify career-related interests, abilities, values and other personality characteristics that might affect career decision-making. Career Assistants are able to administer and interpret some of these assessments and will schedule appointments with career counselors to administer and interpret others. Available assessment instruments include the following:

Strong Interest Inventory (SII)
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
StrengthsFinder
Self-Directed Search (SDS)
Major-Minor Finder

EDL 100: Career Development and the College Student
The CETC adminsters and teaches a two-credit course that allows students to systematically go through the career exploration process. This is a great course for students having difficulty choosing a major or finding a career path, and is typically offered to first- and second-year students. In the course, students will gather information about themselves through assessments and learn to apply it to identify careers and majors that would be a good match.

Peer Counseling
The Career Assistants at the CETC have been trained to provide career-related peer counseling. Students have the opportunity to informally sit down with a peer counselor to discuss and gain clarification related to career questions, to go over the results from eDiscover, and to better understand the things they find in the reference materials at the CETC. This service is offered at no charge.

Career Counseling
The coordinator, graduate assistant, and practicum counselors at the CETC, as well as counselors from the Student Counseling Service, provide formal career counseling to students. Students are able to discuss their career questions with a trained counselor. Counselors also are able to administer and interpret career-related tests, including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory (for a nominal fee, see below). If the student requires more than 5 career counseling appointments, there is a charge for the appointments. However, most career concerns can be handled in less than 5 sessions. Consult the table below for details.

NOTE: Career counseling appointments, like personal counseling, are confidential and no information is released to anyone without your permission. To make an appointment, call or stop in during office hours.
