CETC Outreach Programs

Typical programs we offer:

This page provides a list of current outreach programs offered through the CETC. We can provide programs for Miami academic and student affairs offices, classes, student organizations, and other groups. The outreach programs are run by both professional staff and trained undergraduate career assistants, and can be altered to fit specific needs. We ask that you call and set up an outreach at least one week in advance.

General Overview of CETC Services
Target population: Normally 1st or 2nd year students who are undecided about a major.

Time Frame
: 15 minutes to 60 minutes- depending on request.

Outreach Description:

Students will be given a basic understanding of the resources available at the CETC, and how such services can help them to find either a career or educational track. Afterwards students are given a chance to ask questions and learn more about how they can further explore deciding a major and/or career path.

Tour of CETC:
Target Population: Any student group/organization or class that would like to learn more about the CETC and its resources.

Time Frame: Can range from 45 minutes to 60 minutes.

Outreach Description:
A tour of the CETC is a great way to familiarize students with our services in person. Career advisors will walk through and explain the various resources available to students. Some of these resources include: the CETC library; career computer programs; counseling appointments and many more. After the general tour, students may have the chance to personally explore the center and use any of its available resources.

*Note: We do ask that faculty or person(s) in charge of the class attend the outreach as well.

Career Exploration Process:
Target Population: Students who are not yet decided about either their career path or academic track, typically 1st and 2nd year students.

Time Frame: 15 minutes to 60 minutes

Outreach Description:

The process of going from undecided about either career or academic track is explained. This includes things like how one can learn about oneself (i.e. values, skills, interest, personality), and how one can then use such information for examining career and major options. This outreach is designed to help students feel some sense of control over how they will answer large questions about career and majors, and to help them understand the typical obstacles that make such decisions difficult.

Transferable Skills:

Target population: Typically 3rd or 4th year students and/or athletes who are unsure how their current academic and/or athletic skills transfer into the working world.

Time Frame:
30 minutes to 1 hour - depending on request.

Outreach Description:

The aim of the outreach is to help students identify skills they have accumulated during their time at Miami. Many students do not realize or know how to relate their skills to job postings. For example: Being a "team player" is not only beneficial playing sports, it is also a highly valued skill in the working world.

Interests

Target Population: Students who are unsure of their interests, or do not know what jobs are available in relation to their major/minor.

Time Frame:
30 minutes to 1 hour - depending on size of attendance.

Outreach Description:

Typical outreach may include worksheets designed to help students assess their interests. Afterwards, students will have the opportunity to match their results to Holland's Interest codes where they can explore various majors related to their specific interests. Career advisors are present to help clarify results, questions and explain how the results can help narrow their search for a major and career. The Strong Interest Inventory* can also be utilized for such outreach programs, but must be administered before the program date to participants. These tests help assess your interests and skills. Test results are interpreted with a professional career counselor.

*Note: Students will also be asked to pay to cover the costs of the Strong Interest Inventory (SII-$15.00). Costs incurred for these services at the Career Exploration and Testing Center will appear on students' Bursar bills.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator/Personality Testing
Target Population: Work groups (i.e., office staffs), and other groups.

Time Frame: Approximately 30 minutes is required to take the test itself. The program in which the test is interpreted takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

Outreach Description:
This outreach can be helpful especially to work groups, and can be used to evaluate strengths/areas for improvement among a staff. It is helpful for team building for both new and existing staffs. The test itself is a widely used personality test. It helps assess personal preferences within four categories: where you direct your energy; how you process information; how you make decisions; and how you organize your life. Each person fits into one of 16 personality types. Tests are administered online and must be administered before the program date. A professional counselor will interpret the results and assist in further exploration of related careers.

*Note: Participants will be asked to pay to cover the costs of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI-$15.00). Costs may be paid for by different means, but budget transfers are often an easy means. For students, the cost of the test may be billed to the bursar.
