Held the annual Miami LeaderShape Institute, a campus version of the national program which is an active, one-week inquiry-driven experience. This program pushes students to engage in related work throughout the rest of their life (Day 7). 96% are committed to refining and implementing their vision. One student said "This program is so awesome! I believe 6 days cam change my whole life. You give us so many valuable ideas that we can think about throughout our entire life." (63 participants)
Held 5 sections of EDL 306 for 79 students as well as 5 staff instructors, 2 graduate student instructor and 4 undergraduate teaching assistants.
Involvement in student organizations is has a direct correlation with retention in college.
B. Broaden students’ learning and growth through active engagement with student life opportunities.
Roughly 300 Student Organizations with roughly 10,000 students involved (recent data shows 70% of Miami undergraduate students are involved in a student organization). The LeaderShape Institute challenges students to examine their integrity, responsibility, and ethical behavior on a daily basis, and not just in certain circles. 88% described the clarity of their personal values as stronger or much stronger. On student stated "This program is life changing and more students should get an opportunity to do it." (63 participants)
Our office has been an integral partner in the planning of the BSC, as it focuses a lot around our area. Vanessa and I meet regularly with Susan about planning for the Student Organization wing as well as the common/performance areas.
The SAL office hosted or partnered in 25 programs throughout the course of the year with a total attendance of roughly 18,824 participants, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members.
The four student organizations housed out of the Student Activities & Leadership Office (AfterDark, CAC, PB, Sigma Alpha Pi) hosted 89 events with roughly 60,123 participants, mixed between students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.
C. Develop in students the adaptive and creative capacities for lifelong learning and success in a rapidly changing world.
Development of ENGAGE Leadership Certification Program, which will be a comprehensive, mutually beneficial, university wide program
Each individual LeaderShape Institute challenges the ~60 student participants to consider their place in our rapidly changing world.
EDL 306: The Nature of Group Leadership is an introductory course on leadership, giving students a base understanding of leadership both in organizations and the community.
The U-LEAD Adventure is the students’ first opportunity to learn about Miami’s definition of leadership (MLC Values) and what it means to be a leader in our rapidly changing world.
D. Become a national model for intercollegiate athletics by maximizing student-athlete development and creating an engaged student body with the successful implementation of the Culture of Champions strategic plan.
Many student athletes also participate in various offerings of our office as part of the Culture of Champions plan, including the LeaderShape Institute and Student Organizations. There has also been a strong commitment of support of the ENGAGE Leadership Certification Program.
Our office offers a number of Graduate Assistantships and Practicum Opportunities (6 total).
NACA Mid-America and National Conference volunteers/Conference Planning Committee
Leadership Connections workshops on various topics (roughly 10 workshops presented to 250 students in 2008-2009)
Development of ENGAGE program, considered to be an upcoming “Center of Excellence” in leadership development
Development of teaching assistant positions for EDL 306, with 6 undergraduate teaching assistantships in Fall 2008
Kidsfest reaches out to the youth of the community to give them an opportunity to experience life at Miami.
The 10th Annual Breast Cancer Banquet benefiting the Cincinnati Chapter of the Susan G. Koman foundation, raising over $1200 for the cause.
Many Student Organizations are dedicated solely to work in our community. (73 organizations self identify as a service organization)
After participating in the LeaderShape Institute, 98% of participants described their commitment to civic responsibility as stronger or much stronger.
NACA regional and national involvement by our students and staff promotes Miami in a positive manner.
The Latin & Caribbean Festival fosters an unprecedented level of collaboration between the Miami and Oxford Communities. (Roughly 2500 participants)
The Annual Latin & Caribbean Festival maximizes the representation and engagement of diverse and multifaceted viewpoints. (Roughly 2500 participants)
The Global Holiday Party (150 participants) brought together a diverse group of students to learn about and celebrate different cultures. One participant stated “I’ve never seen a wider variety of Miami Students together in one place.”
Program Board won 8 NACA Mid-America Awards, bringing recognition to Miami
Implementation of the Program Board/AfterDark SWANK Scholarship
Creation of the SWANK AfterDark Intern program
Properly utilized both state and endowed funds as well as maximizing the stewardships of our office’s endowed funds.
