About ENGAGE
Empowering the Next Generation towards Action, Growth, and Engagement
Mission
We aim to empower and develop Miami University students through a multitude of educational experiences that seek to prepare them for a lifetime of leadership and service to our greater world.
Vision
To see a generation of empowered and engaged student leaders, who think critically and reflect upon the importance of service, integrity, diversity, and collaboration within leadership .
The Program
The ENGAGE program will consist of a series of developmental workshops to help individuals on their course to developing their skills for socially responsible leadership. Participants will participate in at least six workshops in the first component of ENGAGE. Students will also participate in service learning opportunities, write reflections on their experiences, and attend at least two cultural life programs at Miami University. In other components, participants will get involved in various activities and conferences around campus to help them develop.
Learning Goals
To explore leadership through a variety of historical frameworks and understand the role the individual plays within each leadership context
To explore one's own multi-cultural identity and uncover the way in which multiple aspects of identity (i.e. race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, social class, nationality, etc.) affect one's understanding of self and others.
To explore one's unique talents and strengths and how that applies to their personal leadership approach
To reflect upon one's personal values and how one maintains congruence with his or her values and everyday actions
To create a personal mission statement or vision for his or her life in which one will apply leadership concepts in order to turn that vision into action
Three Components
Learn Component
Participants will particpate in a number of workshops divided between three phases to begin their leadership development. Students will also attend campus cultural events and write reflections.
Three Phases:
Me: In this phase participants will learn more about themselves.
You: In this phase participants will learn more about others.
Us: In this phase participants will learn how to come together to make a difference.
Do Component
Participants become engaged with a number of opportunities available around campus. Participants will participate in 25 hours of direct service to the community as well as 25 hours of leadership opportunities. Students will write reflections on these experiences.
Be Component
Participants will participate in a number of Engaged Leadership Opportunities. These include a reading group, attending cultural life programs, participating in an Engaged Workshop Opportunity such as EMPOWER or Alternate Spring Break, and write a final reflection defining their personal philosophy of leadership.
Requirements for Completion
Participants must complete a minimum of 8 total workshops. Some workshops will be required, others are electives for the participants. For each workshop a 1-2 page reflection will be written. Students must also complete a set number of service learning activties and attend a number of cultural life programs. Students will be directly involved with leadership and service opportunities on campus and in the community. Students will also complete a pre-survey and post-survey.
Best of all, ENGAGE is designed to be an open program to work collaboratively with other programs and departments on campus. As facilitators of this program we recognize that there are many excellent programs that take place around campus that stimulate student learning in different areas. Students who participate in an activity outside of a scheduled ENGAGE workshop can still have it count towards completion for ENGAGE. For example, if a student takes the StrengthsQuest in EDL 306, they do not ALSO have to take it as part of the ENGAGE workshop. They simply need to write a reflection based off of a prompt from the ENGAGE facilitators.
Cost for Participation
Free! We do not want to place restrictions on participants in this program, and want to make it accessible to everyone.
Requirements for Participation
Our goal is to make this program open and accessible to everyone. However, for the launch of the program, we are only accepting registration from Miami University Students. Our hopes are to spread the program to Miami University Faculty/Staff, Talawanda High School and the general Oxford Community. For the launch, only Miami Students will be accepted.
Students from the regional campuses may also participate in this program. Workshops will only be held on the Oxford Campus at launch, so those that wish to participate must be able to attend workshops on the Oxford Campus.
