Academic Advising for First Year Students at Summer Orientation
It is the responsibility of each student to learn about, understand, and meet all academic requirements and deadlines. Academic information and advice are available through many sources.
Academic Advising at Miami University begins during the Summer Orientation and Registration Program. At Orientation, you will attend multiple sessions that address academic advising issues. During the afternoon of Day One, you will attend MIAMI ACADEMIC ADVISING where you will learn how the advising process takes place at Miami. Following this session, you will attend the ACADEMIC ADVISING session. In this session, you will meet with staff from your academic division to learn about University requirements, including the Miami Plan for Liberal Education, and divisional and major requirements. You will also have the opportunity to engage in some ACADEMIC EXPLORATION by attending an optional session geared toward exploring other academic divisions and majors. If you are undecided about your major, considering changing your major, curious about other programs, or considering a double major, this is your opportunity to meet with representatives from the divisions. In the evening, you will attend the ACADEMIC ADVISING WORK SESSION where you will work with advisers to make preliminary decisions about class schedules in preparation for the next day’s advising and registration session. On the morning of Day Two, you will attend FINAL ACADEMIC ADVISING where advisers will review your course selections. After meeting with an adviser, you will proceed to REGISTRATION where you will register for fall courses. Academic advisers are also present during course registration to answer questions and assist all students. The registration portion is restricted to students only.
Once you arrive on campus, you will work with advisers from the Office of Residence Life (ORL). ORL coordinates academic advising for most students during their first year at Miami University. ORL advising staff consists of First Year Advisers, who are full-time staff members with master’s degrees who live and work in the residence halls. Graduate students who work either as Assistant First Year Advisers or Graduate Academic Advisers assist the First Year Advisers. Additionally, commuter students work the Commuter Adviser in the Commuter Center.
