Tutoring Center Tour

The Tutorial Assistance Program provides "peer" tutors for individual or small group tutoring in specific courses as well as reading, writing and study skills. Tutors are undergraduate and graduate students who have the necessary content background and have completed EDT 310, a training course in methods of tutoring.

Tutoring is designed to:

* Clarify course content
* Stress understanding of concepts
* Strengthen background skills needed for mastery of material.
* Practice application of material to content
* Reinforce learning
* Promote independent learners

 

The tutorial services are divided into different centers. Graduate assistants manage each of the centers. The center numbers are:

The Bernard B. Rinella, Jr. Learning Center hours are:

Administrative Office Hours: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday

Tutoring Hours: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday

8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday

TUTOR TRAINING

EDT 310, “Methods of Tutoring Adults,” is a one-semester hour training course for all newly hired tutors. The College Reading and Learning Association approve this course, which can be repeated for up to three credits. The class meets three times during the semester with the remainder of the course to be completed on Blackboard.

CONVERSATION CORNER

This is a conversation group for non-native speakers of English. Participants can practice their conversational English with tutors. Sessions are free of charge, and meet Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in 224 McGuffey Hall.

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI)

This is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and retention in traditionally difficult academic courses. The program provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer facilitated review sessions for targeted courses.

TUTORING AND PEER MENTORING POSITIONS

Tutors are hired throughout the year in all content areas. Students working as tutors find tutoring to be an excellent opportunity for keeping abreast of their courses and for preparing for taking standardized tests.

* Tutors are required to tutor six to ten hours a week.

* Tutors are required to do group tutoring as well as one-to-one tutoring.

* Tutors are required to run study groups in residence halls on an as needed basis.

* Tutors are required to participate in the “End-of-Semester Blitz” before finals.

* Tutors are required to meet with their graduate assistant at the end of the semester to be evaluated.

* Tutors must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 in the curriculum and a 2.76 cumulative GPA.

* Tutors pay rate is $7.70 per hour.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The RLC supports ten Graduate Assistants. Typically, every year two vacancies are created on an average. The graduate assistants work 20 hours a week and are responsible for managing their respective centers. The positions are filled in the spring for the following fall academic year. GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q. How do I get a tutor?

A. You can register for a tutor on-line at: http://www.muohio.edu/tutoring

You can also register for tutoring by coming into the Rinella Learning Center. The center is located at 16 CAB (Campus Avenue Building) and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Q. How much does tutoring cost?

A. Tutoring is free of charge to all Miami University students.

Q. Where does the tutoring take place?

A. All tutoring is on-site at 16 Campus Avenue Building.

Q. What do I do if I need to cancel an appointment?

A. You can cancel an appointment through our on-line scheduling system or by calling 529-8760. All students who cancel an appointment less than 24 hours in advance will be billed $5 for a NO-SHOW. All students who NO-SHOW their tutor will also be billed $5 by the Bursar’s office, these charges are in addition to the cost of 5 hours of tutoring.

Q. How do I know that my tutor will be qualified to help me?

A. All tutors must have completed and received a B or better in the class they will be tutoring. Tutors are required to take a course, “Methods in tutoring Adults”, before they can begin to meet with students clients.

Q. What if I am unhappy with the tutor assigned to me?

A. If, for any reason, your assigned tutor does not work out, let us know. Contact your graduate assistant and we will make every effort to set you up with someone else.
