The Scholastic Enhancement Program was honored with a Retention Excellence Award from Noel-Levitz®, a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in higher education enrollment management, financial aid and student retention.

The Scholastic Enhancement Program is an admission-based program established in 1993, that serves as a link between students accepted into the program and the rest of the university.

Mission

The Scholastic Enhancement Program, under the auspices of the Rinella Learning Center, provides academic and personal guidance for targeted students to ensure their completion of a degree through coordinated programs and services in cooperation with faculty and staff campus-wide.

Goals:

-Provide special admission for targeted students on the conditional agreement that they participate in the scholastic enhancement program and satisfactorily follow through on that commitment;

-Provide early contact with faculty, staff and successful upperclass students who can provide personal support, advice and assistance;

-Require assessment of skill levels in reaading, writing, mathematics, and academic skills followed by required participation in improvement programs/activities;

-Offer peer group activities that are designed to build social and personal friendships that will serve the student in times of stress;

-Provide early advising and offer special course selection that will build academic skill levels and abilities;

-Provide supplemental instruction in specific courses using faculty and/or selected and trained upperclass students;

-Provide exposure to successful role models in and outside the university on a continuing basis.

Motto

“We meet the students where they are and go where they take us”

All students admitted through the Scholastic Enhancement Program, are required to cooperate with program guidelines as stated in the Miami University Student Handbook…..

SECTION 01.102

Freshmen

01.102.F. Persons admitted to Miami's Oxford campus who show academic promise, but whose academic profiles, as evaluated by the Office of Admission and the Associate Dean of Students for Learning Assistance and Retention Programs, suggest potential difficulty in completing a Miami degree will be required to work with the Scholastic Enhancement Program and follow individually developed educational plans provided by that program, which may include: additional assessment of academic skills; early advising and supervised course selection; personal counseling; and selected other scholastic enhancement activities. Mandatory participation will be required of all participants for at least two years, or until participants achieve minimum academic standard. Persons admitted under this educational plan will be refused course registration for subsequent semesters if they do not fulfill the requirements of the Scholastic Enhancement Program.

Program Components

Academic Advising

The Academic Coordinators work within a strong academic advising network to lend assistance in course planning, registration, and career counseling. The SEP Coordinator and Coordinator for Support Services serve as the primary advisors for all first-year SEP students. All first-year SEP students are required to meet with a member of the SEP staff before registering their courses through the University registration system. Advising reports are kept on file to ensure proper course planning.

Midterm Academic Evaluations

A detailed academic progress evaluation is distributed to all SEP students professors/instructors midway through each semester. This evaluation allows the coordinators and students to monitor their academic progress.

Tutorial Assistance

Tutors are available, free of charge, to all SEP students. Tutors may be obtained for most courses in groups or a one-on-one basis. Students are encouraged to make use of this outstanding support service.

EDL 110: The University and the Student

Through a mandatory, 1-credit hour, credit/no credit course, first-year SEP students are introduced to the various services on campus. The class is instructed by the SEP staff and features weekly guest speakers.

Program Option

SEP/URO (Undergraduate Research Option)
Living Learning Community

The Rinella Learning Center offers a unique opportunity for SEP students to live in a common first-year residence hall. The focus of this learning community is to provide first year students with an opportunity to work on a research project with a faculty mentor. Registration for URO is optional. More information about this and other living learning communities are included in the university housing option materials.
