First Year Research Experience - FYRE

First Year Research Experience (FYRE) is a program intended to provide First Year students with opportunities to engage in research and to establish early contact with faculty mentors. 

Program Options

In order to accommodate multiple disciplines and to provide flexibility, students have the option to choose one of four tracks that are available:

• FYRE URO (Undergraduate Research Option) a research intensive program, including all disciplines.
• FYRE STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
• FYRE Research Shadowing (Students experience the research environment without fully participating in an ongoing project)
• FYRE TEAM RESEARCH (Research project conducted with a team of students)

All options require students to additionally engage in common seminar/workshop experiences, and participate in the annual undergraduate research forum sponsored by the Office for the Advancement of Research (OARS).

Goals and Objectives

• To engage first‐year students in faculty research early in their academic careers within a postsecondary setting.
• To allow students to experience the practice of research through workshops, seminars and activities.
• To enhance communication and presentation skills.
• To foster the development of a community of student researchers/scholars within the first year experience by providing educational enrichment opportunities and ways for first year students to interact, network, socialize and collaborate together.
• Increase first year student participation in other research activities at Miami University throughout their undergraduate career.
