Parents and Family
As the parent, guardian, or family member of a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or allied student you may have questions and concerns about how your student will fare on Miami's campus. All students are welcome to visit GLBTQ Services to learn more about these or any other programs.
Safety
GLBTQ Services sponsors the Safe Zone program, where allies across campus receive training in ways to better support the LGBT community. These allies are easily identified by stickers, making them a visible resource to anyone needing help.
We are also fortunate to have allies in the Miami University Police Department.
Miami's non-discrimination policy specifically provides for an environment free of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. GLBTQ Services and the Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity are entrusted with responding to incidents that violate this policy.
Community
GLBTQ Services regularly sponsors a variety of social and educational events. Everyone is welcome to attend. Learn more about these events by checking out the calendar.
There are a number of groups that meet on and around campus, providing students opportunities to meet others and get involved.
Read what current students have to say about the campus.
Every May, GLBTQ Services sponsors Lavender Graduation, a chance to celebrate the achievements of our community. Everyone is welcome to attend, and we encourage parents to come join in the celebration.
Housing
If your student identifies as LGBT, you may worry about her or his roommate. Ultimately, your student will make a decision about coming out to his or her roommate. Many people are surprised by how supportive their roommates are, and are relieved when they can live openly in their residence hall. RAs, First Year Advisors, and other staff within the Office of Residence Life can all provide support through this process. Or, contact GLBTQ Services for support.
Your student may be straight but have concerns about living with an LGBT roommate. Encourage your student to see this as an opportunity to learn about a group that he or she doesn't know much about. Again, RAs and the Office of Residence Life can help facilitate this conversation between roommates.
Support for You
You may also need support as your LGBTA student goes off to college. You are welcome to contact GLBTQ Services if you have specific questions. Please keep in mind that we take confidentiality very seriously.

Another great resource is Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). Their website has fantastic resources, and you can also find a chapter near you.
