Gender Identity
Whether you identify as genderqueer, transsexual, or any other identity, you are welcome at GLBTQ Services. We believe in embracing gender diversity and making you feel comfortable at Miami. Here are some resources specifically for anyone concerned about their gender identity or gender expression.
Policy
Miami's non-discrimination policy specifically provides for an environment free of discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation. GLBTQ Services and the Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity are entrusted with responding to incidents that violate this policy.
Housing
Miami University recognizes that sex-segregated housing may not be the best option for some students. To meet this need, we provide a limited number of gender neutral housing spaces. Space is limited to two suites in Hahne or Flower Hall (four students per suite), and one apartment in Heritage Commons (four students per suite). This program is intended for second year or older students who feel most comfortable living with a roommate of a different legal sex. This option is not intended for romantic couples.
If you and your potential roommate(s) are interested in this option, contact Jamie Workman, Coordinator of Residence Life at workmaj2@muohio.edu. Or contact us for assistance.
Preferred Name - Student Health Services
Staff from Student Health Services will recognize your preferred name and preferred pronoun; simply note it on your medical history form and/or gynecology form. If you have already filled out your medical history form, please speak to an SHS receptionist to have your preferred name and pronoun added to your file.
Preferred Name - Computer Systems
IT Help explains how to create a preferred name that will be displayed within Niikha and on your email. Other records within Miami's system cannot be altered without a legal name change. Contact us if you have questions.
Direct results from changing your name in this system:
- Your preferred first name will now appear on all class rosters. The "Profile Picture Roster" uses the name and profile image that you upload to Niihka.
- If your peers or professors need to email you through Niihka, they will only find your preferred first name.
- When you blog on or upload a document to a Niihka course site, only your preferred first name will be used to identify you.
- Your preferred name is displayed when you send and receive emails. (Part of this depends on if the person has emailed you before under the legal name.)
- Your faculty member will still see your legal name in Banner and other reports where grades are entered.
- Both the preferred name and your legal name will be visible in Miami's directory.
Identity
The State of Ohio BMV now has a policy called a "Declaration of Gender Change." This makes it possible to change the sex on your driver's license after transition. Visit TransOhio for more information.
Comfort
We have identified several family restrooms around campus that are suitable for people of any gender identity. These restrooms are single-occupancy with a locked door, and are unisex. In addition to being helpful for trans people, these family restrooms can be useful for people with small children and individuals with bathroom attendants. We have assembled a map of these restrooms.
We are looking to expand the number of family restrooms that are available on campus. Let us know if you're interested in helping!
Counseling
Miami University Student Counseling Services are available to students enrolled on the Oxford campus. Counselors there have experience working with transgender individuals. They are able to provide referrals for accessing hormones and other medical transition needs.
Recreation
Miami University Recreational Sports Center has recently adopted the following policies:
Miami University students, faculty/staff and spouse/partners of students, faculty/staff shall be permitted to participate in Intramural Sports and Club Sport programs in accordance with the person’s gender identity/expression. Participation in Club Sports will be reviewed on a case by case basis based on the applicable National Governing Body’s policies and procedures.
The Recreational Sports Center will ensure that every student, faculty, staff and guest has access to a locker room and bathroom facilities in a safe, comfortable and convenient environment. Transgender individuals shall not be forced to use the locker room corresponding to their gender assigned at birth. In locker rooms that involve undressing in front of others, transgender individuals who want to use the locker room in accordance with their gender identity/expression will be provided with the available accommodations that best meets the needs and privacy concerns of all involved. Such accommodations could include, but are not limited to private area in the locker room or use of the family changing room.
