what students are saying about service

At the end of the academic year, the Office of Community Engagement and Service conducts an online survey for students to provide feedback about their service experiences throughout the year. (Click here to see complete survey results.) Below are some quotes from Miami University students who responded to the 2005 survey:

"I have been extremely involved in the community this year, and I have loved every hour of my time spent doing service work. Having community service as a part of my life has truly allowed me to prioritize the important things in life, and be grateful for what I have."

"Being involved in service has been an amazing experience. I feel that I have learned a lot not only about myself but also my community. It was definitely worthwhile because I feel that I have made an impact on improving the community. I really enjoyed being able to work at the local elementary school and be around such wonderful children. They have taught me a lot about myself in the process."

"I really enjoyed my involvement in the community this semester. Every activity I participate in, I learn more about myself and the person I want to become. I enjoy improving the lives of other people as well as having a positive impact on the community. I also enjoy meeting new people and working with others."

"My involvement in the community is essential to the person I am and the person I plan to become. This year especially, I have come to realize the importance of community involvement, especially when one is a new member. In this particular college setting, it is important to develop a strong bond with the community in which one lives, in terms of both respect and service."

"I loved being able to explore the community outside of Miami. It would be so easy to go through four years with no knowledge of the reality that exists outside of campus."

"I think my involvement in service was definitely 'worthwhile.' Personally, the major impact was not so much how I affected the community, but how the work affected and changed me. I discovered my strengths and weaknesses. I also observed what works in regards to programming and organizations that work in the real world."

"I was glad to be able to be involved with the community through tutoring. I felt that it connected me with family and social issues in Oxford that, as a student, I may not have otherwise been exposed to."

"My involvement in service has allowed me to get involved in the Oxford community. It has allowed me to experience things that I would never have been able to experience. It has made me a better person."

"I've helped others, learned more about my surroundings, met people, discovered opportunities, and in turn learned more about myself."

"Before I was involved in this program, I knew I wanted to 'change the world,' but didn't know how. After being in this program, I realized that I can make a big difference by doing small things. In addition to this, tutoring helped me find one of my majors. It helped me to realize that I want to help make society and lives better."

"Being involved in service has helped me not to get lost in the world as a 'college student.' I've been able to venture outside of campus and stay engaged in society as a whole, not just my little corner of the world."
