The Office of Community Engagement & Service is now accepting applications for its Spring 2009 EMPOWER and EMPOWER II programs. More information about each program is included in the application links. Applications are due January 26th, 2009. We look forward to your participation in these great programs!
EMPOWER
Are you looking for a meaningful way to get involved and make a difference in your local community this semester?
EMPOWER is a nine-week service learning program for students at Miami University who are interested in expanding their understanding of diversity and how social issues impact local communities. Although intended for first and second year students, the program is open to everyone regardless of previous experience. EMPOWER is a rewarding yet intensive program that combines service, education, and critical personal investigation to foster social awareness and build community. Possible service projects may include working in a choice food pantry, housing cooperative, social services center and disabilities agency in Oxford, Hamilton, Middletown and Cincinnati.
Through EMPOWER, the Office of Community Engagement & Service seeks to cultivate and support Miami students who will continue to serve and participate in their community as engaged citizens.

EMPOWER II
WELCOME BACK!
EMPOWER II is a semester long program intended for students at Miami University who have completed the first EMPOWER course and are interested in continuing their understanding of social issues impacting local communities. EMPOWER II also combines service, education, and critical personal investigation to foster social awareness and build community.
Service projects for EMPOWER II will be self-selected. The goal of the service component of EMPOWER II is to allow students to explore their personal passions while receiving some guidance from the Office of Community Engagement & Service.
EMPOWER II students participating in the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 EMPOWER II programs will also have the opportunity to apply to participate in an Alternative Spring Break trip to Miami, Oklahoma where they will spend a week serving with the tribe for which Miami is named.
