The Office of Community Engagement and Service coordinates two programs that enable Miami University students to tutor children in local schools and community agencies. The differences between the two programs are explained below.

Adopt A School Program
The Adopt A School Program is designed for Miami University students who wish to actively volunteer in the local schools and interact with students in grades K – 12. Adopt A School volunteers can assist teachers and other school personnel in the classroom, in the lunch room, on the playground, or wherever they are needed most. They also have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child by interacting with children one-on-one and helping them to achieve their goals in school.

Students interested in the Adopt A School program must complete an application and attend a one-hour training session prior to volunteering. For more information about the Adopt A School Program, click here or contact the Adopt A School office at 529.8720.

America Reads Program
America Reads tutors are Miami University students who are serving in our local schools to earn money for college. They are eligible for Federal Work Study funding and receive this funding through their involvement in the America Reads Program. America Reads tutors are trained to provide individual assistance in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary to students in grades K-6 in elementary schools in Butler County .
