General Career Exploration and Planning Sites

Most Recommended Sites (good to start with!):

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook This site contains a large database of careers, and provides information about specific careers including the possible outlook for such careers.

  • Vault Online Career Library This site contains descriptions of a variety of different careers as well as a number of different career guide books that can be downloaded. This is a subscription site that Career Services at Miami subscribes to, so you'll need to enter your Miami unique ID and password for access.

  • CollegeGrad.com This site has a large database of careers, and allows you to look up careers by keyword search, hiring trends, salary information, and more. Click on the link entitled "career info" to access the database information.

Other General Sites (also good):

  • Collegeboard.com This site has a large database of careers, and contains information about a wide variety of careers that can be accessed via the index of career fields.

  • CollegeView.com Job Profiles This site allows you to access information about careers by title, and includes information including job conditions, sample resumes, salary and outlook, and "a day in the life" profiles.

  • Dictionary of Occupational Titles This site uses the same codes as some of the CETC books, as well as many other resources (DOT codes). It provides short descriptions of careers, but has descriptions of many different careers. An ideal site if you want to look up a lot of careers, and don't want too much detail.

  • JobProfiles.org This site provides unique descriptions of various careers written by professionals in those careers. Professionals describe their occupation, their likes and dislikes pertaining to their career, and advice to those who might want to enter the field.

  • Jobweb.com This site provides information about careers that can be accessed either by the title of the career or by academic major. An excellent site.

  • Occupational Information Network (O*NET) Online This site contains descriptions of the types of tasks that are done by people in various occupations. Occupations can be looked up by tasks, skills, or name. Occupations are listed with O*NET codes, but can be cross-referenced with other types of codes (i.e. the DOT codes). Good for initial research, as the information given is not too detailed.

Informational Interviewing

  • Miami University Alumni Career Network This site will allow you to contact alumni of Miami University for the purpose of "informational interviewing". There are a large number of Miami alumni included representing a wide variety of fields. These individuals have volunteered to talk with students about their careers. Note that this network is NOT meant for the solicitation of internships or jobs! Rather, you can talk with alumni about their careers to learn the "inside scoop" and to get a feel for whether it is the type of career you might enjoy. Please remember to be PREPARED AND PROFESSIONAL when talking with alumni as you are not only making an impression for yourself but also for other Miami students. You should ALWAYS prepare for such an interview! Click to access the downloadable tips for an informational interview, this will help you prepare. To log into the Alumni Career Network, use your Miami unique ID. IMPORTANT: your unique ID is BOTH your username AND password!! From there, you will find a searchable database of alumni.

  • Career Resources for Business Majors This site provides links for information about a variety of different business professions.

  • Careers in Business
    This site provides descriptions of specific fields within various business majors, along with links for more information if a field appeals to you.

  • Business Majors Career Links
    This site provides information on common careers pursued by individuals with different business majors. The "What Can I Do With A Major In..." links are the most useful and link to career titles that can be easily researched.

  • Education World
    This site has information on getting a job as a teacher, different routes to training, different job opportunities available to teachers, licensure data, and lots of other useful information.



    Psychology/Social Work


  • Areas of Specialization in Pscyhology
    This site explains the differences between the various subspecialities in psychology, and may help to differentiate which area is a good fit.

  • American Psychological Association This site provides information on jobs related to psychology, access to job listings, and has an especially good link entitled "PsychCareers".

  • Association of Social Work Boards This site provides information on licensure requirements and examinations for social workers.


  • Graduate Schools & Careers In Psychology
    This site explains the differences between various fields in applied psychology (i.e. clinical, counseling, pscyhiatry). It is written from a pro-clinical bias (as opposed to counseling bias), and should be read as such. It also explains differences in degrees (i.e. master's, Ph.D., M.D.). It also explains the process of applying to graduate programs.


  • Psychology Careers for the 21st Century
    This is a brochure you can download from the American Psychological Association. It explains the different career fields within psychology and highlights stories of professionals working in psychology.


  • Psychology Information Online
    This site provides information on psychology careers, training programs, and a variety of specialties for those interested in practice-related careers. The "students" link is especially helpful for information purposes.


  • Sport Psychology
    This site provides a good explanation of the field of sport psychology, and also describes various career tracks that a person could take.

  • The Black Collegian Online - This site provides resources related to self-assessment, career exploration, and job searching.


  • Careers in Aging This site provides information about the variety of different jobs that are available in working with older people. These jobs are in a variety of fields beyond healthcare.

  • Sports Careers This site provides basic information about careers in sports, including professional, college, and high school athletics, health and fitness, recreation, sports associations, sporting goods, sports broadcasting, and sports venues.

  • Gradschools.com This site allows you to search for graduate schools by program or by location, and provides information about getting into graduate school.

  • Law School Admissions Council This site provides information about the entire process of law school, and takes you from preparing yourself to apply to the process of selecting and applying to schools. It has lists of law schools, information about the LSAT, and many other useful things.

 

Federal Jobs

  • govtjobs.com This site provides job postings in a wide variety of fields related to the government.

  • studentjobs.gov This site provides information and the ability to apply for internships and other types of student jobs related to the government.

Working Abroad

  • International Center - University of Michigan This excellent site has information about working abroad in different countries, with different fields of interest, tips about working abroad, and listings of various overseas positions.

  • BUNAC
    This site provides information about opportunities in Australia, England, and New Zealand.

  • JobsAbroad.com
    This site lets you search for job possibilities overseas by area of interest, and also contains information about studying or interning abroad.

  • Peace Corps
    This site provides information about what the Peace Corps does, where you can go, what fields you can work in, and what is involved in signing up.

 

Assessment Tool Sites

  • HumanMetrics Personality Test - This site allows you to take a personality test based off of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It presents feedback about your "personality type", and relates this feedback to potential career directions.

  • Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential (MAPP) This site allows you to answer questions in an open-ended format to form a picture of who you are and what is important to you. It provides a textual description of many qualities important in career decisions. This is not a "test" in the traditional sense, but more of an instrument that supports personal reflection.

  • Skill Barometer This site allows you to determine how important various skills are for different careers. It provides you with a sense of which skills you might need to develop if you were to pursue various occupations.

  • True Careers - This site assists in finding jobs, and allows you to post a resume and think about planning for the future.
  • USAJobs.com - This site provides the opportunity to look for job positions and post resumes.

  • Idealist.org This site provides information about job, internship, and volunteer experiences in non-profit organizations, both domestically and abroad.

  • Coolworks.com This site provides information about careers and seasonal work related to outdoor adventure and things of this nature (i.e. national parks, ski resorts).
