The following are
the ongoing and cumulative events of the Harry T. Wilks Leadership
Institute. The Institute seeks to foster a campus culture
that calls all students to leadership. Informed by critical
thinking, engagement, reflection, and a concern for ethics,
all events of the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute offer
opportunities to challenge and question our assumptions about
leadership.
Dr. Otto Scharmer
on "Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the Future"
- Those who attended one of Dr. Scharmer's presentations during
his February 21-22, 2004, residency know how exciting his
new theory is. Click
here for the summary graphic of the "U" theory
of leadership. Dr. Scharmer's work with collaborating authors
Peter Senge, Joe Jaworski, and Betty Sue Flower is one of
the most thought provoking models coming into the leadership
literature. You can order Dr. Scharmer's upcoming book by
going to Presence.
A dowloadable and complementary workbook is available at this
site as well. The other book of which Dr. Scharmer spoke,
Theory U, will be available later this year or early
in '05.
John Glenn Opened
Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute on March 31, 2004
- The Honorable John Glenn spoke for the grand opening of
the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute on March 31, 2004.
Mr. Glenn and his wife, Annie, met for a "Fireside Chat"
at the Miami Inn with a small group of invited students, and
then had dinner at President Garland's home, spoke with media
at a press conference and delivered an 8 p.m. lecture, "Ethical
Leadership for a Global Future." Go to John
Glenn's Inaugural Lecture for background and for summary
notes from this important event.
Luz Lajous Vargas
residency April 19-21, 2004 - Former President of the
International Women's Forum, public servant, and businesswoman,
Luz Lajous Vargas will help those planning, and those learning
from, the programs of the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute
understand the needs of an ever-smaller globe. Excerpts from
her visit will be available at a later time.
