  • University of Richmond - The University of Richmond began a significant initiative in higher education by establishing the Jepson School of Leadership Studies in the fall of 1992. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, the school seeks to develop in each student a base knowledge about leadership that achieves the traditional goals of liberal art education and also provides conceptual tools which support the exercise of leadership in a variety of relevant settings. The major in leadership studies is intended to educate students for and about leadership. Students are educated about leadership in a classroom-centered courses which provide conceptual frameworks and an appropriate body of knowledge for understanding the study and practice of leadership. Educating for leadership required experimental learning that takes the student from the classroom to relevant settings, such as internships and service learning, in order to practice and observe leadership. The Jepson School views leadership as a form of stewardship and seeks to develop honest, caring and socially responsible leaders that use their abilities to serve society in a variety of ways. • The Kettering Foundation - The Kettering Foundation is an operating foundation rooted in the American tradition of inventive research. Its founder, Charles F. Kettering, holder of more than 200 patents, is best known for his invention of the automotive self-starter.

Established in 1927, the Foundation today continues that tradition. The objective of the research now is to understand the way bodies politic, rather than bodies mechanical, function or fail to function. Kettering treats politics in its broadest sense -- politics as a dimension of everyday life rather than as only what officeholders and governments do. The research is done for practical purposes; it goes into crafting "tools" (study guides, community workbooks, and other exercises) that help a public act responsibly and effectively on its problems. The National Issue Forum books are used throughout the world to foster deliberation on issues important to the public.

The principles of reflective human action include: accept chaos, share information, develop relationships, and embrace vision. Together, these concepts form the foundation of reflective human action which is defined as "an active mind-engaging process of meaning-making in a community of practice." A module includes experiential activities to teach the concepts of this leadership theory. Collegiate and professional training programs have been underway since 1995, and a new initiative has been designed to develop collaboration among honor societies on university campuses to implement the Campus Change Model that will be utilized to teach Reflective Human Action.
