Other colleges
and Universities:
- University
of Richmond - The University of Richmond began
a significant initiative in higher education by establishing
the Jepson School of Leadership Studies in the fall of 1992.
Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, the school seeks
to develop in each student a base knowledge about leadership
that achieves the traditional goals of liberal art education
and also provides conceptual tools which support the exercise
of leadership in a variety of relevant settings. The major
in leadership studies is intended to educate students for
and about leadership. Students are educated about leadership
in a classroom-centered courses which provide conceptual
frameworks and an appropriate body of knowledge for understanding
the study and practice of leadership. Educating for leadership
required experimental learning that takes the student from
the classroom to relevant settings, such as internships
and service learning, in order to practice and observe leadership.
The Jepson School views leadership as a form of stewardship
and seeks to develop honest, caring and socially responsible
leaders that use their abilities to serve society in a variety
of ways. The Jepson School confers a BA in leadership studies.
A minor in leadership studies is available to all University
of Richmond students to enhance their primary field of study.
- Duke
University (Hart Leadership Program) - The mission
of the Hart Leadership Program is to help Duke undergraduates
become engaged citizens in a democratic society. By combining
rigorous academic study with community-based service experiences,
we challenge our students to recognize and embrace their
leadership potential. Our interdisciplinary faculty of scholars,
practitioners, artists and activists combine diverse methodologies
-- traditional coursework, research, case studies, oral
history, documentary writing and photography -- to create
a program of leadership education that is at the forefront
of innovations in higher education.
- Marietta
College (McDonough Leadership Program) - Talking about
leadership and showing a student how to lead are two very
different things. The McDonough Leadership Program encourages
students to examine leadership in the classroom, develop
and practice it through a Senior Internship on campus, in
the community, or anywhere in the world. Options for involement
include choosing a Minor or Certificate, becoming active
in Leaders in Action or SOLID (Student Organization Leadership
in Development), or participating in other classes, events,
and programs sponsored by the McDonough Leadership Center.
- University
of Maryland (Leadership Academy) - The James
MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership is founded on the
belief that there is leadership within every person. We
are a multidisciplinary academic organization that fosters
responsible and ethical leadership through education, service,
and scholarship in the public interest. The Academy at the
University of Maryland was established to foster future
generations of political leaders through education, training,
service, and research. Founded to encourage political participation
among under-represented groups, it is the first academic
program in the country to support emerging leaders seeking
elective office.
Leadership
Resources and Programs:
- International
Leadership Association - all those who practice,
study and teach leadership. The ILA promotes a deeper understanding
of leadership knowledge and practices for the greater good
of individuals and communities worldwide. The principal
means by which our mission is accomplished through the synergy
that occurs by bringing together public and private sector
leaders, scholars, educators and consultants from many disciplines
and many nations.
- National
Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs - The National
Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP) provides a
central clearinghouse of leadership materials, resources,
and assistance to leadership educators. NCLP members receive
publications, assistance and consultation, access to leadership
resource files, and networking opportunities with other
professionals engaged in leadership education. NCLP is housed
at and is supported by the Office of Campus Programs at
the University of Maryland, College Park.
- Center
for Creative Leadership - The Center for Creative
Leadership is an international, nonprofit educational institution
founded in 1970 in Greensboro, NC. Through our research,
we are developing models of managerial practice. Through
our training programs and products, we are applying these
models as guides for assessment and development. This combined
approach makes our research accessible and our training
practical.

-
SmartCity - One of the most important dilemmas we face as we choose where to pursue our life's work is the nature of the communities where we will live and work. The SmartCity initiative is based on Dr. Richard Florida's research on the creative class that cities need in order to maintain vibrant social and economic welfare. SmartCity is a way to look at creating environments that are attractive to young, college-educated, and diverse people.

Leadership
for a Changing World - Leadership for a Changing
World seeks to recognize, strengthen and support leaders
and to highlight the importance of community leadership
in improving lives. The program seeks to confirm that
resourceful leaders are bringing about positive change
in virtually every community. Together with these leaders,
Leadership for a Changing World hopes to facilitate a
new dialogue about community leadership, one that encourages
others to appreciate that leadership comes in many forms
and from many different communities.

Campus
Compact Wingspread Conference on Civic Engagement
- Young adults are talking more about civic engagement
than in recent memory. There is rising concern about the
state of democracy and how to encourage those who have
the freedom to participate in governance. This site provides
information about how young people can be more involved
in living democracy.
-
The
Kettering Foundation - The Kettering Foundation
is an operating foundation rooted in the American tradition
of inventive research. Its founder, Charles F. Kettering,
holder of more than 200 patents, is best known for his
invention of the automotive self-starter.
Established
in 1927, the Foundation today continues that tradition.
The objective of the research now is to understand the
way bodies politic, rather than bodies mechanical, function
or fail to function. Kettering treats politics in its
broadest sense -- politics as a dimension of everyday
life rather than as only what officeholders and governments
do. The research is done for practical purposes; it goes
into crafting "tools" (study guides, community
workbooks, and other exercises) that help a public act
responsibly and effectively on its problems. The National
Issue Forum books are used throughout the world to foster
deliberation on issues important to the public.
-
EnVision
Leadership - this unique program is dedicated to taking
the lessons learned by college students into the ranks
of K-12 children. Focused on empowering leadership among
youth, several young adults are trying to start leadership
development in the very early experiences of children
through school and community involvement.
-
Reflective
Human Action
- this leadership theory includes the core features of
authenticity, ethical sensibility, and spirituality as
well as the features of action: mission, meaning, existence,
resources, structure, power, and fulfillment. The principles
of reflective human action include: accept chaos, share
information, develop relationships, and embrace vision.
Together, these concepts form the foundation of reflective
human action which is defined as "an active mind-engaging
process of meaning-making in a community of practice."
A module includes experiential activities to teach the
concepts of this leadership theory. Collegiate and professional
training programs have been underway since 1995, and a
new initiative has been designed to develop collaboration
among honor societies on university campuses to implement
the Campus Change Model that will be utilized to teach
Reflective Human Action.
-
