CAWC Globalization programs - The Center for American and World Cultures provides ongoing programs on culture, diversity, and globalization. Go to CAWC and click on calendar to discover opportunities that will help you become better informed about the changing global conditions that impact all our lives.

Pro-Social Action, Social Entrepreneurship & Millennium Goals - These are three phrases that are making their way into current discussions about leadership and service. Interestingly enough, Miami alumni are involved in New York in bringing two of these concepts to life. Chad Boettcher is involved in the first case with MTV's pro-social movement and Ross Meyer is beginning the graduate program in Social Entrepreneurship at NYU to learn about how to turn principles of entrepreneurship to positive social change. Both of these are in spirit related to the UN Millennium Goals that set a standard for global change that many of those involved in social change work advocate. Check out these links to see what's available and then consider how you might become involved in progressive social action.

Citizenship and Leadership - Few people would dispute the relationship between citizenship and leadership. Yet, there are many questions about how we are doing in fostering civic commitment among citizens of all ages. This will continue to be an important topic that is threaded throughout Miami's leadership programs. To gain some background for this topic, you might want to read College Students and Politics: A Literature Review by Ross Meyer (Miami 2004) and Dr. Nick Longo, Director of the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute. You could also check out what what students are saying about civic engagement at the national level by going to Wingspread Conference on Civic Engagement.

Connections - Our world has become a "just in time" place and the Miami leadership programs are responding. A brand new dimension to what's available to students is that individuals and organizations can consult "Leadership Connections" to see a broad list of topics that could be helpful in improving the effectiveness of organizations or the leadership effectiveness of those in them. Check it out to see if there's something you need to explore and then use the on-line registration system to request a facilitator.

University Lecture Series - The University Lecture Series has many opportunities throughout the year to hear prominent personalities, many recognized as "leaders" in the U.S. and around the globe. For full information go to the University Lecture Series website. Miami hosted Patrick Buchanan, Andrew Cuomo, Edna Buchannan, Carol Higgins Clark and Matthew Pearl, and Aaron McGruder in 2004-5. Bob Woodward of Watergate intrigue and "Deep Throat" fame will be at Miami as part of the 2005-6 series.

Speakers sponsored by the Etheridge Center for Reflective Leadership and the Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute are asked to consider the uniqueness of Miami University's campus culture and it's commitment to inclusive leadership. Guidelines for speakers are summarized in MU Guidelines for Successful Partnership.

Ponder this...

Dr. Csikszentmihalyi's research on "flow" repeatedly makes the point that we are at our best when we are actively engaged in something about which we care. In addition, purposeless work and passive leisure add little to our quality of life. If this is true, then our stewardship of purpose and active learning becomes even greater than the mere passage of time. Click below for more information on the February 14, 2005, appearance of Dr. Csikszentmihalyi.
