Welcome - We're glad you chose to visit the web site that describes one of the most innovative and pace-setting leadership programs in the U.S.A. This site has a variety of descriptions and links that will help you learn about and stay abreast of the leadership learning opportunities at Miami University. This site is part of a campus-wide initiative to foster the leadership potential in Miami students. You will want to check out Miami University Leadership as well as what you find here. There will be some overlap until both sites are updated to complement each other.
We believe that every student has leadership potential and our vision is to reach every one of our students. That requires a shared understanding of leadership and it requires many programs and partners to get the job done. We hope you will help us achieve the vision of fulfilling the promise of all Miami students through deeper intellectual and experiential engagement.
Vision of "Miami's
Leadership Commitment"
To develop leadership potential in all students for the
global and interdependent world of the future. Miami defines leadership as "a mutual influence relationship where people work together to improve or change something to their mutual benefit" (Joseph Rost, 1993).
Miami's View
of Leadership
Our mission is to empower students in authoring their own character development and leadership journey. Students are encouraged to incorporate ten values for this journey; adopting them guides students through their learning as they achieve the critical learning outcomes articulated by the Division of Student Affairs:
The five Student Affairs learning outcomes and corresponding ten values which form the foundation of the
Miami Leadership Commitment are:
Reflecting critically:
- Think critically and take time to reflect
- Take purposeful risks and learn from success and/or failure
Engaging in one's community as well as our global society:
- Understand and serve the needs of others
- Be flexible and open to change
- Be responsible for your actions
Communicating effectively:
- Communicate directly, honestly, and with civility
Contributing positively to groups/teams:
- See potential within yourself
- Respect the dignity and potential of others
- Celebrate and embrace diversity
Leading a life of integrity:
- Support and challenge each other to live by these values
Career/life-long learning outcomes: Broad curricular/cocurricular experience, international experience, an internship, and reflective engagement that demonstrates a deeper understanding of the world.
