Nutrition for College Students:
Nutritional Challenges
Skipping Breakfast (or other meals) due to time restrictions
Overeating at dining halls because they're "all you can eat"
Snacking when bored, stressed, or homesick
Eating late at night with friends
Going out to eat often
Alcohol Consumption
Eating the same meal everyday-lack of variety
Its important for our bodies to get a balance of all the food groups and all the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Everyone needs a certain amount of calories to live a healthy lifestyle. In order to maintain a healthy balance of calorie intake, watch food portions and enjoy foods in moderation. Making healthy choices does not always mean you must eliminate your favorite foods or ingredients entirely.
ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS:
1. Water- Found in all body tissues and essential to food digestion and body functioning
2. Carbohydrates- If you don't have enough carbohydrates you may feel fatigued and unable to concentrate because carbohydrates are a source energy. Be sure to eat plenty of complex carbohydrates which include dietary fiber (whole grains and wheat, cereal, rice).
3. Proteins-All cells are made up of proteins and your body needs about 1g of protein for every 2 lbs of body weight. Sources include beef, milk, eggs, pork, peanut butter, whole grains, and legumes. Vegetarians/vegans can choose alternatives such as whey protein, tofu, soy and rice milk.
4. Fats- High intake of saturated fat, known as a "bad fat", can lead to heart conditions and high cholesterol. Saturated fat is found in fried food, butter, dairy products, meat, chocolate, and coconut oil. Unsaturated fats are found in vegetable/fish products (avocado, nuts, vegetable/canola/olive oils,) and are needed by the body for energy, insulation, to protect organs, to absorb certain vitamins, and to build hormones and cell membranes.
5. Vitamins- essential for the body to carry out normal metabolism and are found in a variety of foods especially fruits and vegetables.
6. Minerals- needed in trace amounts for formation of blood cells, healthy nerve function, and proper operation of other body systems.
