Second Year Programs

What is the Second Year Initiative?

The second year initiative is a university-wide committment to residential learning. Miami University now requires students with both first- and second-year standing to live on-campus. For Greek men and women, this represents a change in structure. Many students join a Greek organization during the second semester of their first year here at Miami. As a result, some fraternities have elected to infuse a residential curriculum into their houses to allow second-year students to live in their houses. Miami University's residenct police indicates that "in lieu of a second year of residency, qualified students are permitted to live in qualified off-campus housing owned or controlled by a recognized student organization." This stipulation allows second-year fraternity men to live in the fraternity houses if the fraternity elects to maintain the second year curriculum.

Many sorority women elect to live on-campus during their second year so as to allow them to live with their sorority sisters. These students will not experience a change in requirements, but will have a second year residential curriculum with a new emphasis on Living Learning Communities.
