The OPC Trip program offers a broad array of unique opportunities to the Miami University and surrounding community. The trips are designed to provide an optimum balance of challenging, educational, and fun activities in the wilderness setting.
We offer a diverse array of programming that varies by activity type, activity level, length, and location. Most of our trip prices include equipment, food in the backcountry, leadership & instruction, and transportation

The Destination: The Ocoee River offers some of the best whitewater in the country. As site of the 1996 Olympic Whitewater Competitions, the 5 mile run provides almost constant Class III-IV rapids. The water released from the Ocoee No. 2 Dam will provide us with the perfect opportunity to paddle in some big water.
The Journey: The OPC will ready us for our whitewater experience by suiting us up head to toe in the proper rafting attire. Our OPC guide will help steer us thru big wave trains and technical whitewater maneuvers. Get ready to dig in and paddle hard!

The Destination: Not only does West Virginia provide World-class rafting but it also provides superior rock climbing at the New River Gorge. Located near the Gauley River, the New River Gorge is an impressive display of natural forces.
The Journey: We will climb the famous sport routes at the New River Gorge, while enjoying the beauty of the New River flowing beneath us.

The Destination: On the border of Kentucky and Tennessee, the Big South Fork River and Recreation Area is a beautifully vast landscape littered with natural arches, caves and hiking trails. Join us as we backpack and explore some of the river gorges and rock formations of the area.
The Journey: Awake just in time to witness the fog creep over the mountains as the sunrises on the horizon casting light thru the trees. And in that moment you just might experience the peace that can only be found in the wilderness. Then we’ll put our packs on our backs and really know that for every up there is a down as we trudge down the trail.

The Destination: Land Between the Lakes offers mountain bikers some virtually undiscovered and excellent rides. The 31-mile North South Trail is nearly all single-track through heavily forested woods. The terrain offers rolling hills with moderate climbs and frequently nears Kentucky Lake opening to breath-taking views.
The Journey: We will mountain bike along the North South Trail, feeling the wind in our face and the mud under our tires, making sure to hit some of the best rides in Kentucky.

The Destination: The Red River Gorge is home to one of the most respected climbing communities in the Midwest. With over 1,000 climbing routes it has been featured in several magazines and books as a premiere climbing site.
The Journey: Epic 100 foot tall sandstone routes and pocket-filled aesthetic climbs make the Red River Gorge a climbing experience you won't forget.

The Destination: One of the gems of the U.S. National Park Service. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers some of the most scenic and diverse recreation opportunities in all of Appalachia.
The Journey: You'll spend the weekend hiking the park's strikingly beautiful mountain trails. Here you will find geologic rock formations dating back millions of year. Bring your fly rod along and cast to the wild trout that fill it's streams.

The Destination: Hailed as one of the most scenic waterways in the Midwest, AuSable River, located in northern Michigan, earns a reputation with pristine forests and abundant wildlife. Portions of the river flow through Huron-Manistee National Forest which is as beautiful as it is wild.
The Journey: After putting in around Grayling, Michigan, you will paddle your way through the brilliant autumn foliage of the Huron-Manistee National Forest. When it is time to put the paddles away for the night, you will camp next to the river and fall asleep to the sounds of the riffling water.

The Destination: We'll spend the weekend on the Lake Erie Tributaries of Northeast Ohio, which are some of the premier steelhead trout fisheries of North America
The Journey: Begin or continue a lifetime of fly-fishing as you chase steelhead trout, known as "Silver Bullets" of the Great Lakes. Hooking a fresh-run steelhead on a fly rod is one of the most exciting experiences the sport has to offer. Join the fishing gurus at the OPC and get hooked.

The Destination: Experience the beauty of winter in Grand Marais at Menogyn. Menogyn has been providing safe, fun and enriching wilderness trips in one of the country’s most beautiful places - the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Menogyn is in the heart of Canoe Country, and in the winter becomes a wonderland to experience.
The Journey: Bring your warm clothes & winter boots for we’ll be skiing, snowshoeing and learning about dog sledding! Snow conditions permitting, we may get a run in, as well as experience with dog care and harnessing. After a night or two of winter camping and winter skills training we’ll return to the lodge where we’ll thaw out in the sauna.

The Destination: The white sandy beaches and brilliant blue-green waters of the Caribbean will be our home for a week as we travel with the wind and currents aboard our 64’ sailboat, the Sundancer.
The Journey: As crew members of this impressive sailboat we will delight in the sights and sounds of the Caribbean islands. We’ll spend our days sailing from island to island taking in the sights. We will work as a team to rig the sails, learn about ocean navigation and actually get behind the wheel and steer. This unique experience will also include snorkeling in the colorful corral reefs, spear fishing and trolling for fish. We’ll learn to prepare a variety of Bahamian cuisine and fresh fish. This journey will also take us to many small island villages where we will spend some time immersing ourselves in the Bahamian culture. There will be plenty of time for soaking up the warm Caribbean sunshine. Come and live the journey with us…sail the Bahamas.

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

The Destination: The Manistee National Forest encompasses almost half a million acres of public land in lower Michigan. The 18 miles of cross country ski trails on the Big M provide great scenery and a quiet setting that is nestled in the woods.
The Journey: On this trip we will glide across new fallen snow, feeling the cool winter air on our faces. As the sun glistens on the white blanketed landscape we will experience the beauty and serenity of winter camping. We will spend time cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, building snow shelters and learning how to live in the winter environment

The Destination: Hammerhead. Genesis. Redneck. These aren't just random words; these are the names of some of the most classic boulder problems found at Horsepens 40. Looking to get outside and boulder on some real rock? Horsepens 40 is the place to go. Being the home to one of the triple-crown competitions, HP40's climbing is unlike any other and is known nationwide for its slopey top outs and beautiful lines.
The Journey: Climb on the sharp and gritty sandstone of HP40. Pull through over hanging roofs and slap your way to the top of some of the most classic sloper problems in the southeast. With all the boulders clustered in one area you are sure to get a full day of climbing in. There are grades of all skill levels so if you are a beginner climber or advanced, HP40 will give you the outdoor challenge you've been waiting for.

The Destination: The Great Smoky Mountains offer some of the finest fly fishing opportunities in the Eastern United States. Over 800 miles of fishable streams flow within the parks boundaries for anglers to explore. The Little River has been named on of the top 100 trout streams in the world.
The Journey: Join the OPC as we angle for the sought after brook, brown, and rainbow trout that call the crystal clear waters of the Little River home. The presence of trout in these waters provides an angling opportunity that most Buckeye State anglers never get. Come along and make your best cast to these beautiful fish.

The Destination: The St. Frances River is noted as one of the most picturesque rivers in the East Experience the excitement and challenge of using your newly acquired skills to paddle through the rapids.
The Journey: You’re in your kayak, paddle in hand. Imagine the sound of rushing water, the spray of whitewater on your face, and the rapids around you. You are kayaking. Learn skills and safety techniques through our workshop series and then hit the frothy whitewater, experience the journey. Kayaking on the St Frances River offers the beginner and intermediate paddler an opportunity to hone their newly developed skills on one of the most beautiful rivers in the mid-west. The rapids range from a class I to class III difficulty which provides plenty of opportunity to work on river reading, ferrying, surfing, and of course rolling! The returning paddler and novice alike will find this river offers plenty to keep you busy! Join the Outdoor Pursuits as we teach, instruct, and play downriver.

The Destination: Visit the Monongahela National Forest, stretching from central West Virginia to near the Virginia border, holds over 900,000 acres that are open to mountain bikers of all ability levels. Known for its breath-taking ridge trails and variety of terrain, this place offers something for everyone.
The Journey: Awake trail-side to catch a quick breakfast and check the pressure in your tires before taking off for the day. Fill your water bottle and you are ready to go. Ride technical, wooded trails until lunch, then get ready to fly on some clean single track all afternoon. Return to camp for a feast to refuel for the next day of adventures.

The Destination: The Allegheny National Forest lies in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania. The variety of conifers and hardwood trees found in this region as well as the Forests many waterfalls and scenic overlooks make it a prime destination of outdoor enthusiasts.
The Journey: Strap on a pack and explore the native lands of the Iroquois Indians, in the Allegheny National Forest. The trails in this historic and beautiful region run alongside cool mountain streams and majestic old growth forests, providing the opportunity for you to view a unique ecosystem seldom found in the Midwest.
