First Aid -CPR | Lifeguard Training |  Instructor Training |

American Red Cross certification courses are designed to train individuals and families to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening emergencies, such as respiratory or cardiac problems, sudden illness, and injuries to infants, children or adults. These are noncredit classes.

Two types of courses are offered:

New: For people who have not taken the class before or who want to review all skills.
Review: For people who have current certifications and wish to review critical skills.

Course Descriptions

CPR/AED For The Professional Rescuer And First Aid Basics - Review (RCPR/PR and FAB)

Successful completion of this class will renew certification for individuals who possess current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and/or First Aid Basics certifications. This class is not intended to re-teach skills; rather it is designed to address the higher points of the course and test participants' knowledge and skills. Individuals who do not wish to renew their First Aid certification need not stay for the last hour of the class.

Prerequisite: Proof of current CPR/AED PR, or First Aid certification
Length of class: 4 hours
Fall Classes

CPR/AED For The Professional Rescuer And First Aid Basics - New (NCPR/PR and FAB)

This class teaches CPR/AED, rescue breathing, obstructed airway, choking care, basic first aid, and bleeding control. All skills are taught for adult, child and infant care. New CPR/PR books and pocket masks are provided to participants on the first day of class.

Note: This certification is required for most Recreational Sports Center staff.

Length of class: 8 hours
Fall Classes

Lifeguard Training - Review/Update (LGR)

Successful completion of this course will renew lifeguard training, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. This class will update participants on the new American Red Cross 2007 lifeguard guidelines and the 2006 CPR/AED guidelines. Participants should be prepared to take a written and water skill test.

Prerequisite: Proof of current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training and First Aid certifications.
Length of class: 4 hours
Fall Classes

Lifeguard Training Prerequisite (LGP)

Successful completion of this class is mandatory before participants may register for the new Lifeguard Training course listed below. Participants must swim 300 yards continuously, consisting of 100 yards freestyle, 100 yards breaststroke, and 100 yards mixed freestyle and breaststroke. Additionally, they must retrieve a 10-pound brick from 10 feet of water, swim the brick 20 yards back to the side of the pool, and get out of the water with out using the ladder or stairs. This must be completed in 1 minute 40 seconds.

Prerequisite: Must be 15 years of age by the completion of the new Lifeguard Training course. 

Length of Class: 1 hour

Fall Classes

Lifeguard Training - New (LGT)

Teaches the skills necessary to guard at an aquatic facility. Successful participants will receive CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard and First Aid Training certifications. Absence from any of the classes will result in a failure of the course and forfeiture of the registration fee. Instructors are not permitted to make up missed material with participants. New Lifeguard Training books and pocket masks are provided to class participants upon registration.

Length of class: 31 hours
Fall Classes

Lifeguard Instructor Training (LGI)

Successful completion of this course will certify participants to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Essentials, Lifeguard Management and First Aid classes. Fee includes LGI instructor Manual and FIT manual.

Prerequisite: Must be at least 17 years old , pass the pre-course written examination (60 questions) with a minimum of 80%. Demonstrate CPR and First Aid Skills, pass the prerequisite swimming skills, rescue skills, and scenarios test.
Length of Class: 40 hours

Water Safety Instructor Training (WSI)

Completion of this course will allow participants to teach swim lessons to children of all ages in the American Red Cross Water Safety Program. It also will certify the participant in the FIT program. Fee includes all manuals.
Prerequisite: Participants must be at least 16 years old, pass the 60-question written test and perform a list of skills proving ability to decently swim all four strokes and be in good health.
Length of class: 30 hours (Only offered in Spring)
