Ohio Student Residency

Students who are classified as residents for tuition purposes receive the benefit of a state-supported education, funded primarily by the taxpayers of Ohio. The residency rules are, therefore, meant to exclude from resident classification those people who are in the state of Ohio primarily for the purpose of receiving the benefit of a state- supported education.

Initial residency classifications are determined at the time a student is admitted to Miami University. Any student classified as a nonresident of the state of Ohio for tuition purposes who feels he/she qualifies according to the Ohio Board of Regents (OBOR) Residency Rules may apply for residency status by submitting an Application for Resident Classification for Tuition Purposes along with supporting documentation.

If upon reviewing the Residency Rules a student feels he/she qualifies for Ohio residency status, the student may submit a complete Application for Resident Classification for Tuition Purposes, along with supporting documentation. Click here for a PDF version of the application. Complete applications must be received at the Office of the Registrar at least 30 days prior to the start of the eligibility term. Decisions are not retroactive. Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis for strict compliance with the stated OBOR Residency Rules. Students will be notified in writing, and by regular U.S. mail delivery, of the decision on their application for residency status.
