Graduation with Distinction

CALENDAR YEAR 2011

The current criteria for graduation with distinction are based upon University-wide grade point averages: 3.90 for summa cum laude, 3.75 for magna cum laude, and 3.50 for cum laude. These criteria will be continued through the December 2011 graduation date. For students who earn fewer than 64 credit hours from Miami toward a bachelor’s degree or fewer than 32 credit hours from Miami toward an associate’s degree, the cumulative GPA to determine eligibility for distinction at graduation is the lower of the following averages:

  • Average of all courses taken at Miami or
  • Combined average using grades from all college-level courses.

BEGINNING CALENDAR YEAR 2012

Effective with May graduation 2012, the criteria for graduation with distinction will be divisionally based.  The distinction of summa cum laude will be awarded to the highest 2 percent, magna cum laude will be awarded to the next 5 percent, and cum laude will be awarded to the next 10 percent, with no more than 17 percent being awarded honors.  Criteria will be published each June for the following years’ graduation dates and will be based on the three previous years’ average GPA within each division.
