Research Interests
Art Miller joined the department in 1967. He is currently Professor Emeritus, having retired from full-time teaching in 2003. His research interests have been focused primarily on prejudice, stereotyping, and biases in social judgment. In 1979, he was awarded an NIMH senior post-doctoral fellowship to study with Ned Jones at Princeton University. In 1986, he authored a definitive volume concerning the impact of Stanley Milgram's controversial experimental studies of obedience. He edited a 1995 issue (with Barry Collins, UCLA) of the Journal of Social Issues ("The legacy of the Milgram experiments" and a 1999 issue of Personality and Social Psychology Review ("Perspectives on evil and violence"). He has also recently edited a volume entitled "The social psychology of good and evil," published by Guilford in 2004. Current research focuses on reactions to diverse theoretical explanations of violence and genocide, specifically in terms of impressions of the theorists' position on the moral responsibility of perpetrators. He continues to teach advanced undergraduate courses and occasional graduate seminars on stigma, and social psychological perspectives on evil and prosocial behavior.
