| My research interests are focused on the general question of how we can optimize the relationship between a human operator and his/her technological work environment. In approaching this problem, I have tended to follow an ecological approach, examining the ways in which physical and task constraints influence operator work posture and performance. I have been particularly interested in how highly adjustable ergonomic furniture (chairs and work stations) interact with task and user characteristics to afford efficient and healthy working postures. I am also quite interested in the practical implementation of these findings, and have done a fair amount of work on workplace intervention studies and the writing of ergonomic standards. I also have interests in the ergonomic aspects of automated work places, particulary with regard to video display terminal issues. I have supervised graduate and undergraduate research efforts that go beyond postural concerns to the general question of usability of complex systems (such as voice mail and data bases). | |
